Get the 3M 6502QL: a silicone seal, 3M’s full filter line, and a quick latch that drops without removing your hard hat. The 3M 7502 tied it and adds supplied air. For dust only, get the GVS Elipse P100. No half mask is for sewer gas.

How the five compare on our spec score
Five checks from 3M’s, MSA’s and GVS’s own product pages, equal weight. The rules and every input are in the method section near the end.
PlumbingPicks spec score out of 10, from 3M’s, MSA’s and GVS’s product pages, read Oct 22, 2026. It is not a customer rating or a lab test of our own.
A half face respirator is a rubber or silicone mask that seals over your nose and mouth. You screw or twist filters or cartridges onto it, and you pick those for the job. All five here are reusable, and all five are made by companies that publish their materials and sizes.
The two silicone 3M masks tied at 9.6. I put the 6502QL first for its quick latch, my call. The GVS lost the most points because it takes dust filters only.
Each pick, in detail
What each maker publishes, where each mask fits plumbing work, and where each one lost points on our checks.
You go in and out of a crawlspace, attic or dirty room all day and want to drop the mask without pulling off a hard hat or face shield.
Skip it if
You plan to run supplied air on big jobs. 3M lists the 7502 for that, not the 6500QL.
The 6502QL is the half mask I’d grab first for plumbing work, and I’ve used it. It’s the medium size of 3M’s Rugged Comfort Quick Latch 6500QL series, a reusable silicone half facepiece that takes 3M’s bayonet filters and cartridges.
The quick latch is the reason. 3M says the drop-down latch lets you put the mask on and take it off while moving in and out of contaminated areas, without removing a hard hat or face shield. That’s the only 10 on our on-and-off check.
My call: that matters most in a crawlspace. You come out for a fitting, drop the mask to talk, and latch it back before you go under the house again.
The faceseal is silicone, which 3M describes as soft but firm and lightly textured. The brand-written Amazon listing adds that it keeps its shape in high heat. Silicone earned a 10 on our face seal check.
3M’s Cool Flow valve helps release warm, moist breath, and a valve cover points that breath down. The head cradle and straps adjust, and the listing says the straps are polyester and spandex.
It connects to all 3M 2000, 5000 and 7000 Series filters and 6000 Series cartridges. That covers particulates, organic vapors and other gases, depending on what you mount, a 10 on hazards. 3M rates it to 10 times the OSHA permissible exposure limit when properly fitted.
Where it lost points: 3M lists it with its TR-600 and TR-800 powered air systems but marks it “No” for 3M supplied-air systems. The Amazon listing mentions supplied air anyway. We scored 3M’s own table, an 8.
It comes in three sizes: 6501QL small, 6502QL medium and 6503QL large, a 10 on sizes. 3M lists the weight as 0.37 lb and sells spare parts for worn pieces.
3M lists mold remediation, soldering, brazing, cutting, demolition and chemical handling among its uses, and says it fits certain welding and grinding shields. It ships without filters or cartridges, so order those with it.
One thing to know before you order: 3M labels the 6500QL for industrial and occupational use, not consumer use. On a plumbing crew, that’s you. An employer also owes you a fit test and a written program, covered below.
Best for supplied air
3M half facepiece reusable respirator 7502, medium
You might hook the same facepiece to a powered air or supplied-air system on a big job, or you’d rather have a plain strap harness than a latch.
Skip it if
You want to drop the mask while still in the dirty area. 3M’s quick latch 6502QL is built for that.
The 7502 is the medium size of 3M’s 7500 Series, and I’ve used it. It’s a reusable half facepiece with a soft silicone sealing surface, and it has the same bayonet connection as the 6502QL.
It tied the 6502QL at 9.6 on our score. The difference is in how it comes off and what it hooks up to.
The 7500 has a dual-mode head harness, used in standard or drop-down mode. 3M says the drop-down lets you take the mask off in a non-contaminated area without removing a hard hat. That’s an 8 on our on-and-off check, below the quick latch.
The Amazon listing says the harness “adjusts easily to a quick latch design.” 3M’s own page doesn’t say that, and 3M sells its quick latch as the separate 6500QL series. We scored 3M’s page.
Where it wins: 3M lists it for its TR-600 and TR-800 powered air systems and its Dual Airline supplied-air system. That earned a 10 on air systems, the check the 6502QL missed.
The faceseal is silicone, a 10. 3M lists the same Cool Flow valve and downward valve cover as on the 6500QL, and the head cradle and straps adjust for fit.
It takes 3M 6000 Series gas and vapor cartridges and 2000, 5000 and 7000 Series filters, a 10 on hazards. The listing adds the 2200 filters. 3M rates it to 10 times the PEL when properly fitted, the same factor OSHA assigns every air-purifying half mask.
Sizes are 7501 small, 7502 medium and 7503 large, a 10. 3M’s text describes replacement spare parts, but its property table marks spare parts “No”. Since the two disagree, we didn’t score spare parts on any pick.
3M lists chemical handling, cleaning, grinding, sawing and welding among its applications, and the listing adds abatement and construction. 3M doesn’t give a weight on its page.
My call: pick the 7502 if supplied air is in your future, or if you’d rather wear plain straps than a latch. Like the 6500QL, it’s labeled for industrial and occupational use, and filters are sold separately.
Best for a second mask
3M half facepiece reusable respirator 6200, medium
You want a light 3M mask that takes the same filters as your main one, for a helper or for the odd dusty day.
Skip it if
You wear a mask most of the day. The silicone 6502QL or 7502 drops down and has the Cool Flow valve.
The 6200 is the medium size of 3M’s 6000 Series, and I’ve used it. It’s also the facepiece in 3M’s 6291 kit, which Home Depot showed in Google’s results for this search.
3M builds it from a lightweight thermoplastic elastomer instead of silicone, with a cradle head harness and adjustable straps. On our face seal check, elastomer scored an 8 against silicone’s 10.
It takes the same bayonet filters and cartridges as the 6502QL and 7502: 2000, 5000 and 7000 Series filters and 6000 Series cartridges. That’s a 10 on hazards, so the filter chart below applies to it unchanged.
3M also lists it with the TR-600 and TR-800 powered air systems and the Dual Airline supplied-air system, a 10 on air systems. Sizes are 6100 small, 6200 medium and 6300 large, another 10.
Where it lost points: no drop-down. 3M’s property table marks the drop-down feature “No”, so it comes off over your head, a 6 on our on-and-off check. 3M also doesn’t list the Cool Flow valve for the 6000 Series.
The brand-written listing says the mask comes apart for cleaning and ships in a reclosable storage bag. It also says adjustment points on the facepiece help it work with other protective gear.
3M calls the facepiece low-profile. It carries the same rating as 3M’s other half masks, up to 10 times the PEL when properly fitted, and 3M sells spare parts for the 6000 Series.
3M’s application list for the 6000 Series is long. Mold remediation, soldering, brazing, cutting, demolition, cleaning and chemical handling are all on it.
My call: the 6200 makes sense as a second mask in the truck, or for a helper who wears one a few times a month. If you wear a mask most days, I’d spend on the silicone 6502QL or 7502.
Like the other 3M facepieces, it’s labeled for industrial and occupational use and ships without filters or cartridges.

Buy it if
Your shop already stocks MSA cartridges, or your fit test passes on an MSA mask and not on a 3M one.
Skip it if
You want to share filters with a crew running 3M masks. The 420 takes MSA cartridges only.
The Advantage 420 is MSA’s silicone half mask, and I’ve used it. The Amazon listing is MSA part 10102183, the medium size with a single neck strap.
MSA builds the facepiece with its UniBond over-mold and an AnthroCurve face seal, and lists it as liquid silicone and nylon, a 10 on face seal. The brand-written listing calls the sealing surface AnthroCurve II and says it helps fit testing across a varied crew.
The harness is the part MSA talks about most: a four-point yoke and harness, a ComforTop headband, and extra-wide head and neck straps. MSA says it switches easily between lock-down and drop-down mode, an 8 on our on-and-off check.
Its cartridges are the big change from the 3M masks. The listing says it takes MSA’s plastic Advantage cartridges, which mount bayonet style, and its metal Comfo cartridges, which thread on. MSA lists N95 and R95 Flexi filters, prefilters over chemical cartridges, and P100. That’s a 10 on hazards.
It doesn’t take 3M cartridges, so the 3M part numbers in our filter chart don’t apply. Use MSA’s cartridge for the same hazard class. For gas and vapor jobs, MSA links a cartridge service life calculator on its product page.
Where it lost points: MSA doesn’t list a powered-air or supplied-air setup for the 420, a 6 on air systems. Few plumbing jobs need one, but it’s a real gap next to the 3M masks.
MSA lists a built-in moisture release hole in the chin cup and says the mask is latex-free. Its materials list goes down to the valves: neoprene inhalation valves and a liquid silicone exhalation valve.
It comes in small, medium and large, a 10 on sizes. MSA lists NIOSH approval for the US and publishes a facepiece manual and a donning poster.
One small flag on the Amazon listing: it cites “29 CFR Part 1920.134”. The respirator standard is 29 CFR 1910.134. MSA’s own page doesn’t repeat the slip.
My call: buy the 420 if your shop already runs MSA cartridges, or if your fit test passes on it and not on a 3M mask. The mask that seals on your face beats the one with the better score.
Best for dust-only jobs

Buy it if
Your jobs are dust: cutting, drilling, demolition, moldy drywall or old insulation, and you want a light mask with filters in the box.
Skip it if
You also work with PVC primer, solvents or odors. You need a mask that takes an organic vapor cartridge.
The Elipse P100 is GVS’s dust mask with P100 filters in the box, and I’ve used it. The Amazon listing is SPR457, the medium/large size.
It’s the only pick here that can’t take a gas or vapor cartridge. GVS sells it for dust and fumes. Its page lists silica, coal, iron ore, zinc and aluminium dusts, plus toxic dusts such as lead, manganese and chromium. Particulate only scored a 6 on hazards.
My call: it fits cutting cast iron, drilling block, tearing out moldy drywall and pulling crawlspace insulation. It doesn’t fit PVC primer, solvent cleanup or sewage odor.
GVS rates the pleated P100 filters at 99.97% minimum at 0.3 micron, with 3 mbar of breathing resistance per filter at 47.5 liters a minute. The NIOSH approval is TC-84A-6949, and GVS prints that number on its page.
The body is medical-grade thermoplastic elastomer that GVS says is free of latex and silicone. That scored an 8 on face seal. A large central valve lowers breathing resistance and keeps moisture build-up down, per GVS.
Where else it lost points: the strap adjusts in four positions but has no drop-down mode, a 6. GVS lists no powered-air or supplied-air use, another 6. It does come in three sizes, SPR451 S/M, SPR457 M/L and SPR1343 XL, a 10.
GVS says the mask gives a full field of view and doesn’t get in the way of eye or ear protection. Replacement filters are part SPR321, and GVS sells valve diaphragms and a cradle pad as spare parts.
The listing and GVS word filter life differently. The listing says filters last up to 5 years. GVS’s page gives 5 years of storage life for the mask and filters, which is a shelf-life figure. GVS gives no hours-of-use number.
My call: change P100 filters when breathing through them gets harder, or when they’re wet, dirty or damaged. Keep the spare pair in a sealed bag in the truck.
Of the five, it’s the one I’d hand to someone who only ever needs dust protection.

EPA’s Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings guide, 3M’s bayonet filter and cartridge pages, Oatey’s cement and primer safety data sheets and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, read Oct 22, 2026. MSA and GVS users: match the same filter class with that maker’s part.
3M’s particulate filters list mold, silica and certain airborne biological particles among what they help with. Its 60921 pairs a black-labeled organic vapor cartridge with a magenta P100 filter, and 3M says it’s oil-proof. For a primer job in a closet, that one cartridge covers the vapor and any dust.
Oatey’s primer safety data sheet says that where the exposure limit may be exceeded, a NIOSH-approved organic vapor respirator or supplied-air respirator is recommended. It also says to open doors and windows, and run exhaust fans in an enclosed area. Our purple primer guide covers when primer is required at all.
Why a half mask won’t protect you from sewer gas
Hydrogen sulfide is the gas in sewers, pits and septic tanks. OSHA’s rules point away from air-purifying masks for it.
Don’t enter a manhole, pit, vault or tank on a half mask. OSHA says an atmosphere you can’t measure must be treated as immediately dangerous to life and health, and that calls for a self-contained breathing apparatus or supplied air.

0.01 to 1.5 ppm
Odor threshold: the rotten egg smell is first noticed

NIOSH IDLH; loss of smell after 2 to 15 minutes
OSHA Hydrogen Sulfide Hazards page and 29 CFR 1910.134(d)(1)(iii), (d)(2), read Oct 22, 2026.
The smell is the trap. At 100 ppm, OSHA says you can lose your sense of smell in 2 to 15 minutes, so the gas seems to go away while it’s still there. A half mask with an organic vapor cartridge can make a sewer smell fade too, and that tells you nothing about the gas.
OSHA also counts every oxygen-deficient atmosphere as immediately dangerous to life and health. A filter cleans air; it can’t add oxygen. My call: for a manhole or tank, use a gas monitor and a confined space plan, and leave the half mask in the truck.
What EPA says to wear for mold cleanup
EPA sizes the protection to the moldy area. A half mask covers the middle tier.
Area tiers from EPA’s Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings guide, Table 2, read Oct 22, 2026. Bar length shows the tier, not a measured value.
Moldy area
EPA protection
Eye protection
Under 10 sq ft
N-95 respirator minimum, gloves
Goggles
10 to 100 sq ft
Half-face or full-face respirator with HEPA filters, or full protection, by judgment
Goggles with a half mask
Over 100 sq ft
Full-face powered air-purifying respirator
Built into the full face
EPA adds two limits worth knowing. Half-face respirators don’t protect your eyes, and HEPA filters don’t remove vapors or gases. So a bleach or cleaner smell needs a different cartridge, not a better filter.
EPA also says anyone using a half-face or full-face respirator must be trained, medically cleared and fit-tested. For gloves, EPA lists nitrile among the right materials; see our nitrile glove guide.
How much protection a half mask gives
OSHA assigns every respirator type a protection factor. For an air-purifying half mask, it’s 10.
Assigned protection factors from OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, Table 1, read Oct 22, 2026. A powered air-purifying full facepiece is 1,000.
A factor of 10 means a fitted half mask is expected to cut what you breathe to about a tenth of what’s in the room, our plain reading. 3M says the same thing on all three of its picks: protection up to 10 times the OSHA permissible exposure limit when properly fitted.
If the air is dirtier than 10 times the limit, a half mask isn’t enough. That’s where a full facepiece or a powered air system comes in, and why the 7502 and 6200 list both.
Fit test, seal check and beards

Pass
Positive pressure
Close off the exhalation valve and breathe out gently
Slight pressure builds with no air leaking at the seal
Negative pressure
Cover the cartridge inlets with your palms, breathe in gently and hold 10 seconds
The mask stays slightly collapsed with no leak
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 and Appendix B-1, User Seal Check Procedures, read Oct 22, 2026. OSHA adds that a thin nitrile or latex glove can cover inlets the palm can’t.
The fit test is why sizes matter. All five picks come in three sizes, and OSHA wants a new fit test whenever you switch size or model. My call: get fit-tested before you buy a box of masks for the crew, then order the size and model that passed.

Questions people ask
What is the best half face respirator?
The 3M 6502QL, tied at 9.6 on our spec score with the 3M 7502. I put the 6502QL first for its quick latch, which drops the mask without removing a hard hat.
What is a half face respirator used for?
It filters dust, fumes and, with the right cartridge, certain vapors and gases. 3M lists mold remediation, soldering, brazing, cutting, demolition and chemical handling among its uses.
Which is better, a full face or a half face respirator?
A full face gives more protection, an OSHA factor of 50 against 10, and covers your eyes. A half face is smaller and works with eye protection and a hard hat, per 3M and GVS.
What are the four types of respirators?
Air-purifying, powered air-purifying, supplied-air and self-contained breathing apparatus. OSHA’s protection table in 29 CFR 1910.134 sorts them that way.
What filter do I need for mold?
EPA calls for HEPA filters on a half-face or full-face mask for 10 to 100 square feet. On a 3M mask, that’s a P100 filter such as the 2091 or 2097.
What cartridge do I need for PVC primer and cement?
An organic vapor cartridge. Oatey’s primer safety data sheet recommends a NIOSH-approved organic vapor respirator where the exposure limit may be exceeded. On 3M masks, that’s the 6001 or 60921.
Will a half mask protect me from sewer gas?
No. OSHA says an atmosphere you can’t measure must be treated as immediately dangerous, which calls for a self-contained breathing apparatus or supplied air.
Do I need a fit test for a half face respirator?
OSHA requires one before first use, whenever you change make, model, style or size, and at least every year, for anyone using it at work.
Can I wear a half face respirator with a beard?
Not where hair sits between the seal and your face. OSHA doesn’t allow tight-fitting masks over facial hair that breaks the seal.
Can I use 3M cartridges on an MSA mask?
No. The MSA Advantage 420 takes MSA’s Advantage bayonet cartridges and Comfo threaded cartridges. The 3M 6502QL, 7502 and 6200 all take the same 3M bayonet parts.
What is the difference between N95 and P100?
P100 filters at least 99.97% at 0.3 micron, per GVS, and 3M’s P100 cartridge filter is oil-proof. EPA describes an N-95 as filtering 95% of particles.
What size half mask should I buy?
The size your fit test passes. All five picks come in three sizes, and medium is the size on four of the five Amazon listings here.
How we picked these
Why trust me
I’m Isaac Daniels, a licensed journeyman plumber in Georgia (license #JP507711), and I’ve used all five picks. Every spec here comes from 3M’s, MSA’s and GVS’s own pages, and the safety rules come from OSHA, EPA and Oatey’s safety data sheets, read Oct 22, 2026. Where I add advice of my own, it’s labeled as my call.
How I pick
Only reusable half facepiece respirators from well-documented brands, new and in stock on Amazon, checked through Amazon’s product data the same day.
Facts from each maker’s page first. Where only the brand-written listing says something, the page says so, and where the two disagree, the page shows both.
Each card’s spec score comes from the five checks below. All five score 7.0 or higher.
