Buy Black Swan One-Shot: one measured pint of 93% sulfuric acid, listed for toilets. Pick Santeen S-T for PVC you can leave to soak, or ZAP for a 3 to 4 inch waste line. Never pour acid after Drano or any other cleaner.

How the three compare on our spec score
Five checks from each maker’s own sheets, equal weight. The rules and every input are in the method section near the end.
PlumbingPicks spec score out of 10, from Black Swan’s and Pro Line’s product pages and safety sheets, read Oct 21, 2026. It is not a customer rating.
One-Shot wins on the two checks that matter most at home: it holds down fumes and it names toilets. ZAP has the best directions of the three, a dose for every pipe size, but its score dropped because Black Swan’s posted safety sheet is for a different product, Zap+, so ZAP’s own acid strength isn’t confirmed.
Liquid Fire was on the shortlist and scored 6.2 on the same checks, under our 7.0 floor, so it’s out. The section on bottles we left out explains why.

A lye or bleach cleaner is already in the drain, or the fixture has chrome or stainless parts the acid would touch.
Black Swan One-Shot is the acid opener I’d hand most homeowners, and I’ve used it. It’s concentrated sulfuric acid, 93% on Black Swan’s safety sheet dated January 1, 2026, in a 1 pint bottle meant to be poured all at once. Black Swan, the maker, was the Amazon seller when we checked.
Black Swan names three things that set it apart from a plain jug of acid. An “odor blanket,” a solvent layer that rides on top of the acid, cuts the sharp smell most acid openers give off.
The same solvent works as a “chaser” on styrofoam and certain plastics, which sulfuric acid won’t dissolve. And because the pint is one dose, there’s no half-full bottle of acid left under the sink.
Black Swan says it breaks down paper, rags, sanitary napkins, lime and scale, food scraps and other organic matter, and melts grease. Its use list covers sinks, floor drains, toilets, slop sinks, urinals, drinking fountains, grease traps, septic tanks and laundry tubs. It contains corrosion inhibitors, and Black Swan says it won’t harm septic tanks, cesspools or drain fields when used properly.
The directions are strict. Take out the standing water and warm the fixture with hot water first; the label warns that incorrect use may crack a toilet. Pour a small amount slowly, and if nothing bubbles, add the rest. Then cover the drain with an upside-down bucket or dish pan, close any connecting drains, and don’t use a plunger.
It has two weak spots. Black Swan gives no stand time for One-Shot, which is why its dose and wait check scored 7. ZAP’s directions from the same maker wait 15 minutes, then add a quart of cold water slowly. The solvent layer brings its own hazard, too: the safety sheet calls for a NIOSH respirator for organic solvents, plus neoprene or PVC gloves and chemical goggles.
My call: buy One-Shot for a stopped toilet or sink after the plunger and auger have had their turn, when you want one measured dose. Keep it off aluminum, chrome, stainless steel and enamel that isn’t acid resistant, all on Black Swan’s do-not list.
Best for PVC and a long soak

The drain is PVC, a tub or a toilet, and you can leave the acid to sit for a while, even overnight.

You want a dose chart by pipe size. ZAP’s directions give one, and S-T’s don’t.
Santeen S-T comes from Pro Line Chemical & Plastics in Dallas. The listing we picked is the maker’s part 200-6, a case of six 32 oz bottles, and I’ve used it. Pro Line calls it concentrated virgin sulfuric acid, and its 2015 safety sheet puts the acid at 85 to 87%, with a pH under 1.
Pro Line’s main claim is heat. It says S-T works “at lower temperatures,” which counts when you’re pouring acid into PVC or a toilet bowl. It’s the only one of our three picks whose maker says by name that it’s compatible with PVC. Pro Line also says it works on metal pipes and won’t harm septic tanks or drain fields when used as directed.
The maker lists what it dissolves: grease, hair, diapers, cigarette butts, bone scraps, coffee grounds, rinds and soap. It names sinks, tubs and toilets as uses, and says S-T can thaw frozen pipes.
The wait is the clearest spec on the page: a dwell time of 15 minutes minimum and 24 hours maximum. That long window suits a slow line you can leave alone overnight. What Pro Line doesn’t give is a dose by pipe size, so the dose and wait check scored 8, not 10.
Its safety sheet is plain about the risks. It lists metals, water, chlorine bleach and oxidizers as incompatible, says to store it locked up in a corrosion-resistant container, and calls for goggles, a face shield, chemical-resistant gloves and impervious footwear. Spills get soaked up and neutralized with an alkaline material.
Two details don’t line up. The maker’s page calls S-T unscented, while the safety sheet says “distinct odor,” so plan on a smell and run a fan. And the sheet lists metals as incompatible while the product page says it works on metal pipes. S-T names no corrosion inhibitor, so pipe protection scored 7, below both Black Swan bottles.
My call: buy S-T when the drain is PVC, a tub or a toilet and it can sit. Six bottles suit a landlord or anyone who wants a spare on the shelf.

Skip it if
It’s a toilet. ZAP’s uses don’t include one; One-Shot’s and S-T’s do.
Black Swan ZAP is the heavy-duty quart, made for emergency waste line stoppages, and I’ve used it. Black Swan sells it as stock number 09020, and Black Swan itself was the Amazon seller when we checked. It’s concentrated virgin sulfuric acid with corrosion inhibitors, and Black Swan says an independent laboratory has backed up how well they protect pipe.
ZAP has the best directions of the three. The dose goes by pipe size: half a pint for small drains, traps, waste lines and urinals, 1 quart for 3 to 4 inch lines, and half a gallon for 6 to 8 inch lines with extra standing time.
After 15 minutes, add 1 quart of cold water slowly and wait 5 more minutes. If the line is clear, flush with more cold water. Our dose chart below is built from these steps.
Black Swan says ZAP thaws frozen lines and breaks down paper, rags, sanitary napkins, lime and scale, food scraps and other organic matter, and melts grease. Its uses: sinks, floor drains, slop sinks, urinals, drinking fountains, grease traps, septic tanks and laundry tubs. Toilets aren’t on ZAP’s list, though they are on One-Shot’s.
Two checks pulled its score down. The safety sheet Black Swan posts under ZAP’s name is titled Zap+, a different product, so we couldn’t confirm ZAP’s own acid strength and scored that check 5. And ZAP has no odor layer or lower-heat claim: Black Swan lists its odor as acrid and its boiling point at about 540°F.
It’s heavy for its size. Black Swan lists a specific gravity of 1.8 and 15.22 lb per gallon, so a quart weighs about 3.8 lb. Set the bottle on a flat surface, hold it by the handle, and don’t squeeze the sides; the label says that can make the liquid erupt.
My call: ZAP is for a floor drain, a laundry tub or a 3 to 4 inch line where you know the pipe size and want the label to set the dose. For a toilet, buy One-Shot or Santeen S-T.
From Black Swan’s One-Shot and ZAP product pages and One-Shot safety sheet (Jan 1, 2026), and Pro Line’s S-T page and safety sheet (rev. Jul 3, 2015), read Oct 21, 2026. Sizes and sellers from Amazon’s product data the same night.
Read the toilet column first. A stopped toilet narrows it to One-Shot or S-T, and Black Swan says to take the standing water out of the bowl before pouring. If the drain is a floor drain or laundry tub, ZAP’s size chart makes it the easiest to dose right.
Is sulfuric acid a good drain cleaner?
It’s the strongest kind of drain cleaner we cover, which is the case for it and the case against it.
Good at: paper, rags and organic clogs
Black Swan says ZAP and One-Shot break down paper, rags, sanitary napkins, food scraps and other organic matter, and melt grease. Pro Line adds hair, diapers and coffee grounds for S-T.
Good at: lime, scale and frozen lines
Black Swan lists lime and scale deposits for both of its bottles, and both ZAP and S-T say they thaw frozen lines.
Bad at: plastics and solid objects
Black Swan says sulfuric acid won’t dissolve styrofoam, certain plastics and other polymers. That’s why One-Shot adds a solvent “chaser.” A toy or a bottle cap still has to come out by hand or tool.
Risky in: old pipe and the wrong metals
Black Swan warns that old pipe can be porous, with defects sealed by buildup, and the acid can open them into leaks. It also bans aluminum, chrome, stainless steel and enamel that isn’t acid resistant.
So yes, for the clogs the makers name, and only after the easy tools. My call: plunge first, then try a hand auger, and reach for acid when those fail on an organic clog. If you’re weighing a tool against a bottle, our drain snake vs drain cleaner vs plunger page walks through that order.
Acid also isn’t the first bottle I’d try on a slow bathroom sink. A hair clog in a pop-up stopper comes out with a hair wand in a minute, and our best drain cleaner for hair page compares those.
How much acid to pour, by pipe size
Black Swan’s ZAP directions are the only ones of the three that set a dose by line size. Here they are as a chart, with One-Shot’s fixed pint for reference.
From Black Swan’s ZAP and One-Shot directions, read Oct 21, 2026. Pro Line gives S-T a dwell time but no dose by pipe size.

The cold water step confuses people, because every acid label also says never to add water to acid. The rule is about the container: water poured into a jug of acid can react violently. ZAP’s directions add the quart of cold water to the drain, slowly, after the acid has had 15 minutes to work and spread through the line.
My call: if your bottle’s directions don’t give a wait, use ZAP’s 15 minutes as the floor and don’t run any fixture on that line until you’ve flushed it.

From Black Swan’s One-Shot and ZAP product pages and Pro Line’s S-T page and safety sheet, read Oct 21, 2026.
The chrome row is the one that bites at home. A tub’s overflow plate, a chrome tailpiece under a pedestal sink or a stainless kitchen sink all sit right where acid splashes. My call: wipe any splash off chrome or stainless right away with plenty of water, and keep acid out of a disposal, since none of the three makers lists one.
Old pipe is the other risk. Black Swan’s own words: old piping can be porous, with defects sealed by buildup, and the acid may expose them and cause leaks. On a house with old galvanized or cast iron drains, that’s a reason to call a plumber first.
Never pour acid after these
The most dangerous acid job is the one where something else is already in the pipe. These lines come from the makers’ safety sheets.

This is why I won’t pour acid into a drain someone else has already worked on. Drano Max Gel is bleach and lye, as our does Drano work page shows from SC Johnson’s safety sheet, so acid on top of it meets both things on this list at once.
My call: if you don’t know what’s in the pipe, flush it with plenty of water first, or call a plumber and tell them what went in. A plunger on a drain full of mixed chemicals is how people get burned.

One first aid line differs between makers. Black Swan’s labels say to drink large amounts of water if swallowed, then milk of magnesia, beaten eggs or vegetable oil. Pro Line’s safety sheet says rinse the mouth and don’t induce vomiting. Both say to call a doctor right away, so do that first and read them the label.
We searched the CPSC’s recall data for Santeen and Black Swan on Oct 21, 2026, and found no drain opener recalls.
How to use sulfuric acid to clear a drain
This order follows Black Swan’s directions and the warnings on all three bottles. Read your own label first.
1
Make sure nothing else is in the drain
No Drano, no crystals, no bleach. Black Swan says not to use acid where other drain cleaners are present.
2
Gear up and open the room
Goggles, a face shield if you have one, neoprene or PVC gloves, long sleeves and a fan or open window.
3
Close connecting drains and set a bucket
Plug the other side of a double sink and put a deep bucket under the drain, as Black Swan’s labels say.
4
Take out the standing water
Bail it into a bucket. Then warm the fixture with hot water, since Black Swan warns that incorrect use may crack a toilet.
5
Pour a little, slowly
Hold the bottle by the handle without squeezing. If nothing bubbles, add the rest of the dose.
6
Cover the drain and step back
An upside-down bucket or dish pan over the opening. Don’t look into the drain.
7
Wait, then add cold water slowly
ZAP: 15 minutes, then 1 quart of cold water; S-T: at least 15 minutes. Then flush with cold water if it’s clear.
8
One repeat, then stop
If it’s still stopped, call a plumber and name the acid in the line.
Rinse the empty bottle with water before you throw it out; Black Swan says that prevents burns from leftover acid. My call: tape the bottle’s name to the cabinet door until the line runs clear, so whoever opens the trap next knows what’s in it.
When to put the acid down and call a plumber
Two of these come from the labels. The rest are my call.
A second dose didn’t clear it
ZAP’s directions allow a repeat dose. My call: after that, stop. A line that won’t open twice usually has something acid can’t touch.
Another cleaner already went in
Black Swan says not to use acid where other drain cleaners are present. Tell the plumber both product names.
Every drain is slow at once
My call: that points to the main line, where a bottle poured in one sink can’t reach. Our main line guide explains the signs.
The pipe is old or already leaking
Black Swan warns acid can open defects in old, porous pipe and cause leaks.
Something solid went down
Acid won’t dissolve plastics, per Black Swan. A toy or a cap has to come out by hand or tool.
You smell gas or see fumes
Leave the room and ventilate. Black Swan’s sheet lists sulfur dioxide among the gases acid can give off.
Three names come up in every acid thread. Here’s what kept each off the list on Oct 21, 2026.

Questions people ask
Is sulfuric acid a good drain cleaner?
For paper, rags, grease and other organic clogs, yes; it’s the strongest kind of opener we cover. Black Swan says it won’t dissolve styrofoam or certain plastics, and it can open leaks in old, porous pipe. Use it after a plunger and auger, never after another cleaner.
How long should sulfuric acid sit in the drain?
Black Swan’s ZAP directions say 15 minutes, then add 1 quart of cold water slowly and wait 5 more minutes. Pro Line gives Santeen S-T a dwell time of 15 minutes to 24 hours. One-Shot’s directions don’t state a wait.
Can sulfuric acid be used to clean drains?
Yes, when the maker makes it for that. All three picks here are sold as drain openers, with directions for sinks, floor drains and more, and One-Shot and S-T name toilets. Don’t use industrial or battery acid that isn’t labeled for drains.
What is the strongest chemical to unclog a drain?
Concentrated sulfuric acid openers are the strongest drain cleaners we cover. The safety sheets list 85 to 87% for Santeen S-T, 93% for One-Shot and 90 to 100% for Liquid Fire. Stronger also means more danger, so start with a plunger or auger.
Is drain cleaner acidic or basic?
Both kinds exist. Sulfuric acid openers like S-T have a pH under 1, while Drano Max Gel, a bleach and lye gel, has a pH of 11.5 to 13.5 per SC Johnson’s safety sheet. Never pour one after the other in the same drain.
Will sulfuric acid damage PVC pipe?
Pro Line says Santeen S-T is compatible with PVC pipes. Black Swan’s labels say its acid is inhibited against most metals and don’t name PVC. Black Swan also notes that sulfuric acid doesn’t dissolve certain plastics.
Can I use sulfuric acid in a toilet?
One-Shot and Santeen S-T list toilets; ZAP doesn’t. Black Swan says to remove the standing water and warm the fixture with hot water first, because incorrect use may crack a toilet.
Is sulfuric acid drain cleaner safe for septic systems?
All three makers say it won’t harm septic tanks or drain fields when used as directed. Black Swan adds cesspools and leaching systems for its bottles.
Can I use sulfuric acid after Drano?
No. Drano Max Gel is bleach and lye. Liquid Fire’s safety sheet says acid is highly reactive with hydroxides, Black Swan says not to use it where other drain cleaners are present, and SC Johnson warns that acids mixed with its gel may release chlorine gas. Flush with water or call a plumber.
What neutralizes sulfuric acid?
Black Swan’s One-Shot safety sheet lists lime, limestone, soda ash and baking soda for spills. Pro Line says to soak up a spill and neutralize it with an alkaline material. Don’t pour a neutralizer into a drain that still has acid in it.
Why does sulfuric acid drain cleaner smell so bad?
Black Swan lists ZAP’s odor as acrid, and its sheet says acid can give off sulfur dioxide as it breaks down. One-Shot adds an odor blanket, a solvent layer on top of the acid, to hold the smell down. Use any of them with the room well ventilated.
Is muriatic acid the same as sulfuric acid drain cleaner?
No. Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid, a different acid. None of our three picks lists it; their safety sheets list sulfuric acid. Don’t mix the two or use one after the other.
Can I plunge after using acid?
No. Black Swan’s labels say not to use a plunger. A plunger can push acid back up at you. If the drain didn’t clear, call a plumber and name the product.
Is Zep sulfuric acid drain opener worth it?
We couldn’t score it; we found no new Zep offer on Amazon on Oct 21, 2026. If you buy it in a store, use the same rules as here: nothing else in the drain, goggles and gloves, and the label dose.
How we picked these
Why trust me
I’m Isaac Daniels, a licensed journeyman plumber in Georgia (license #JP507711), and I’ve used all three picks. Every spec here comes from Black Swan’s and Pro Line’s product pages and safety sheets, read Oct 21, 2026. Where I add advice of my own, it’s labeled as my call.
How I pick
Only genuine brand acid drain openers, new and in stock on Amazon, checked through Amazon’s product data the same night. The seller is named in each card’s facts.
Listings we couldn’t match to a maker document, or with no new offer, were left out.
