Top pick: Tub O’ Towels Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner$7.98 at AmazonPrice as of Oct 24, 2026, 5:30 AM EDT
Each is the genuine brand, new, in stock and sold by Amazon when we checked at 2:12 a.m. on Oct 22, 2026, and each scored 7.0 or higher on our spec score.
Best for sinks you don’t want clogged: walnut, no pumice

How the five compare on our spec score
Five checks from what each maker publishes, equal weight. The rules and every input are in the method section near the end.
PlumbingPicks spec score out of 10, from the makers’ product pages, technical and safety data sheets, pack labels and brand-written listings, read Oct 22, 2026. It is not a customer rating.
The top two are close and both waterless, with no petroleum solvents and named skin conditioners. Tub O’ Towels edges ahead because it scrubs with walnut shell and its maker says it won’t clog drains. Fast Orange uses pumice, though Permatex calls it extra fine.
The two Zeps and GOJO lose points for solvents, unnamed conditioners or needing water. They’re still good cleaners for the right sink.
Each pick, in detail
What each one is made to remove, how its maker says to use it, and what it does to the drain you wash into.
Best for sinks you don’t want clogged: walnut, no pumice
Walnut shell scrubber; maker says it won’t clog drains
Works with or without water
No solvents and no petroleum, per the maker
Lanolin, aloe and vitamin E
Names grease, oil, tar, ink, adhesives, epoxies and paint
Sold by Amazon itself
Cons
18 oz bottle; the 64 oz pump is a separate buy
Was sold as Tub O’ Scrub; older photos show that name
No pump on this size

You wash up in customers’ kitchens and baths, or you want one bottle that works at a sink and in the truck with no water.
Skip it if
You want a gallon pump for a shop sink. Fast Orange and GOJO come that way.
Tub O’ Towels Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner is the one I’d keep in the truck, and I’ve used it. This is the 18 oz squeeze bottle, model TS18, sold and shipped by Amazon when we checked.
It’s the top pick for a plumber’s reason. Most heavy-duty cleaners scrub with pumice, which is ground stone. This one scrubs with walnut shell, and the front of the bottle says the walnut shell formula won’t clog drains. That’s the only drain claim any of these five makers puts in writing, and it scored a 10.
It also works anywhere. The label says it removes tough grime with or without water, and no water is needed for use. On a job with the water off, that matters.
Tub O’ Towels lists what it takes off: grease, oil, tar, ink, adhesives, epoxies and paint. That’s seven tough soils, the most any maker here names apart from Fast Orange and Zep Cherry Bomb.
It’s gentle by the maker’s account. The page says it contains no harsh chemicals, no solvents and no petroleum. The bottle says it’s made with lanolin, aloe and vitamin E, three named skin conditioners, which scored a 9. The formula is biodegradable, per the maker, with a citrus scent.
One thing to know before you order. Tub O’ Towels renamed it. It used to be Tub O’ Scrub, and the listing’s own photo says new name, enhanced scent, same performance. If a supply house shelf shows the green Tub O’ Scrub bottle, it’s the same product line.
The page says a 64 oz pump is available too.
My call: buy the 18 oz for the truck and wash up at a customer’s sink with it, since that’s a drain you don’t want to come back to.
Best for jobs with no sink: waterless fine pumice
Fast Orange Pumice Lotion
Fast Orange 25219 Fine Pumice Lotion Hand Cleaner, 1 gal with pump
Names resins, epoxies, paint, ink and gasket cements
Extra fine pumice, per Permatex
Not hazardous on its safety sheet
Cons
Still pumice, so it goes down the drain as grit
A gallon jug is bulky in a truck
Its safety sheet says harmful to aquatic life
Citrus scent isn’t for everyone
Extra fine pumiceNo petroleum solventsBiodegradable, per TDSWaterlessPart 252191 gal with pump
Buy it if
You want a gallon with a pump for the shop or truck, and you often clean up where there’s no running water.
Skip it if
You’ll wash at a customer’s sink and don’t want pumice in their trap. Tub O’ Towels has no pumice.
Fast Orange Fine Pumice Lotion is the gallon I’d keep at the shop, and I’ve used it. This is part 25219, a 1 gallon bottle with a pump, sold and shipped by Amazon when we checked.
It’s made to work dry. Permatex’s technical data sheet says to rub it into your hands, without water, until the dirt and grease dissolve, then wipe with a dry cloth or rinse. That scored a 10, and it’s why I’d pick it for a crawlspace or a job with the water shut off.
Permatex calls it petroleum solvent-free, with no harsh chemicals, petroleum solvents or ammonia that can sting cuts or abrasions. Its safety data sheet says it isn’t considered hazardous under OSHA’s rules.
It names more skin conditioners than any pick here. The page lists aloe, lanolin and glycerin, and the data sheet adds propylene glycol, jojoba oil and vitamin E. That scored a 10.
It also names a long list of soils that turn up on a plumbing job. Permatex lists resins, oil, grease, tar, grime, printers ink, epoxies, paint, rubber cement, and gasket and tile cements. That’s a 10 too.
The scrubber is pumice, which is why it isn’t the top pick. Permatex says its pumice is extra fine and cleans more gently than coarser pumice cleaners. That scored an 8 on the drain check, between walnut shell and pumice of no stated grade.
Two smaller notes. Its safety data sheet says it’s harmful to aquatic life, and Permatex says the smooth lotion, not this pumice one, also works on laundry stains.
The same lotion comes in 7.5 oz and 15 oz bottles and a half gallon.
My call: keep the gallon at the shop sink, and wipe off with a rag before you rinse so less grit goes down the drain.

Your hands come off the job with roofing tar, paint, adhesive or asphalt on them, not just grease.
Skip it if
You want a cleaner without solvents. Tub O’ Towels, Fast Orange and Zep TKO all say they have none.
Zep Cherry Bomb Gel Hand Cleaner is the one I’d grab for the stuff that won’t come off, and I’ve used it. This is the 48 oz pump bottle, model ZUCBHC48, sold and shipped by Amazon when we checked.
Zep sells it as an industrial hand degreaser. Its page names grease, tar, carbon, asphalt, inks, resins, paints and adhesives, plus oil. That’s the longest list of tough soils on this page, and it scored a 10.
The reason it works on those is in the listing: a blend of natural pumice and solvents. That’s the trade-off. Solvents help on tar and paint, but they’re also what the gentler picks leave out, so this check scored a 6.
You can use it wet or dry. Zep’s directions say to put a small amount into wet or dry hands, rub it into the dirt or grease, work it into your knuckles and under your nails, and rinse well. That scored a 9.
Zep says it contains emollients that moisturize and help prevent dryness, but it doesn’t name them, so that check scored a 6. The listing says the cherry scent covers diesel and fuel odors, and Zep’s page says it removes petroleum and solvent odors from your hands. It’s made in the USA, per Zep.
The scrubber is pumice, and the listing title calls it volcanic rock. Zep doesn’t state a grade, which scored a 7 on the drain check.
Two things to know. Zep’s page for this 48 oz bottle says it isn’t available for sale in California, so West Coast crews may need another pick. And the pump comes on the bottle, as the listing photo shows.
My call: keep it for the tar-and-paint days, and use a gentler cleaner the rest of the time.

You run a shop with a sink and a wall dispenser, and the crew washes up there at the end of the day.
Skip it if
You need to clean up with no water. TKO’s directions call for wet hands and a rinse.
Zep TKO Hand Cleaner is the shop-sink soap of the group, and I’ve used it. This is the 1 gallon refill, R54824, with no pump, sold and shipped by Amazon when we checked. A 32 oz bottle, R54804, is the second size on this card.
It works differently from the waterless picks. Zep’s directions say it’s best with wet hands: rub it into wet, soiled hands, lather, then rinse with water. So it needs a sink, and that check scored a 7.
Zep says it combines pumice with synthetic detergents. The listing for the 32 oz says it makes a rich lather but rinses freely without leaving a soap film, and the page says it cleans without leaving soap residue.
It’s one of three picks with no solvents. Zep calls the formula solvent-free and lanolin-enriched, and the listing says it has no solvents to dry out or irritate hands, which makes it an all-weather formula. That scored a 10. Lanolin is the only conditioner it names, a 7.
Zep’s page names tough dirt, grime and grease. That’s a shorter list than the others, so it scored a 7.
The gallon is a refill. Zep’s page says TKO works with its D-4000 dispenser, and the 32 oz listing says that size is made for the D-1000. Check which dispenser is on your wall before you order.
The scrubber is pumice, grade not stated, which scored a 7 on the drain check.
Zep lists the scent as lemon-lime. TKO and Cherry Bomb come from the same maker, but they’re built for different jobs: TKO for the daily wash at a sink, Cherry Bomb for tar and paint.
My call: buy the gallon for a shop sink with a Zep dispenser, and the 32 oz if you don’t have one.

Buy it if
You want the familiar orange gallon at the shop for everyday dirt, oil and grease, washed off at a sink.
Skip it if
You clean up away from water, or your hands crack in winter. Fast Orange names five skin conditioners.
GOJO Natural Orange Pumice Hand Cleaner is the name most people say when they mean hand cleaner, and I’ve used it. This is the 1 gallon pump bottle, SKU 0955-02, sold and shipped by Amazon when we checked.
GOJO describes it as a quick-acting lotion hand cleaner with pumice scrubbers, made for dirt, oil and grease. Those are the only soils it names, so that check scored a 7.
It’s gentler on the solvent side than its reputation. GOJO’s page says it cleans without harsh solvents and has had no petroleum distillates since June 2021. That scored a 9.
The label says to start with dry hands. Rub it in, add a few drops of water as you keep cleaning, then rinse well and wipe dry. So it starts dry but finishes at a sink, a 9 on the water check.
GOJO’s page doesn’t name any skin conditioners, which scored a 5, the neutral mark for a fact the maker doesn’t state. Its safety data sheet lists glycerin among the ingredients.
That safety sheet also gives it the signal word Warning: it causes serious eye irritation. Keep it out of your eyes.
The scrubber is pumice, grade not stated, a 7 on the drain check. The back label’s ingredient list starts with water, pumice, laureth-7 and glycerin.
GOJO’s page says it’s made in the USA and should be stored below 110°F, so don’t leave the gallon on a truck dash in a Georgia summer.
One listing note. The Amazon title calls it an OEM replacement for outdoor power equipment; that’s a listing quirk, and the photos and SKU are GOJO’s own 0955-02 gallon.
My call: it’s a fine shop-sink cleaner, but for a truck I’d take Fast Orange or Tub O’ Towels.

Does pumice hand cleaner clog drains?
It’s a real question on plumbing forums, and it’s the one a plumber should care about. Here’s what each maker says about its scrubber.

GOJO Natural Orange

From the Tub O’ Towels bottle and product page, the Fast Orange technical data sheet, Zep’s pages and listing, and GOJO’s product page, read Oct 22, 2026.
Pumice is stone ground into grit, and stone doesn’t dissolve. It washes into the trap with the grease it lifted off your hands. Only Tub O’ Towels makes a drain claim, and it’s the only pick without pumice.
My call: at a customer’s sink, use the walnut one or wipe off with a rag first. At a shop sink that sees pumice every day, run hot water for a while after washing, and pull the trap when it slows. Our trap size by fixture and drain cleaner pages cover the rest.

None of the five names PVC cement or pipe dope by name. Fast Orange names gasket and tile cements and rubber cement, and Tub O’ Towels names adhesives and epoxies, which are the closest matches on a plumbing job.
My call: wipe solvent cement off before it skins over. Once it’s cured on your skin, any of these takes a few rounds. Our purple primer and pipe dope pages cover where those come from.
Which ones are easiest on your hands?
Washing up five times a day cracks skin. These are the facts each maker gives about solvents and conditioners.
Pick

Permatex is the only maker that speaks to cuts: it says Fast Orange has nothing in it that can sting cuts or abrasions. GOJO’s safety data sheet carries a warning for serious eye irritation. Fast Orange’s safety sheet says it isn’t considered hazardous.
My call: if your hands crack in winter, use Fast Orange or Tub O’ Towels every day and save Cherry Bomb for tar.
How to get grease off your hands
Pulled from the makers’ directions, in the order that works on a job.
1
Start dry
Fast Orange says to use it without water at first, and GOJO’s label says to start with dry hands.
2
Work it in
Rub it over your hands until the dirt and grease dissolve. Zep’s Cherry Bomb directions say to work it into your knuckles and under your nails.
3
Add a little water if you have it
GOJO’s label says to add a few drops of water as you keep cleaning. Zep TKO wants wet hands from the start.
4
Wipe, then rinse
Fast Orange says to wipe with a dry cloth or rinse. Wiping first takes the grease and grit into the rag instead of the drain.
5
Rinse well
Every maker that calls for water says to rinse. GOJO’s label adds: wipe your hands dry.
From the Fast Orange technical data sheet, the GOJO 0955-02 label, and Zep’s Cherry Bomb and TKO pages, read Oct 22, 2026.
After sewer work, these get the grease off but none is sold as a germ killer. My call: use the hand cleaner, then wash with plain soap and water, and see our nitrile gloves and disinfectant spray pages for the rest of the cleanup.

Is it tar, paint, asphalt or adhesive?

Zep TKO
GOJO or Fast Orange gallon
My call for a plumbing truck: Tub O’ Towels in the door and a Fast Orange gallon at the shop. Add Cherry Bomb if you do roofing jacks or tar work.
For a plumber, Tub O’ Towels Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner. It works with or without water, has no solvents, and scrubs with walnut shell that its maker says won’t clog drains. Fast Orange Pumice Lotion is a close second for a waterless gallon.
Does GOJO hand cleaner clog drains?
GOJO doesn’t say either way. Its Natural Orange formula uses pumice, which is ground stone and doesn’t dissolve, so it ends up in the trap. Tub O’ Towels is the only pick here whose maker says it won’t clog drains.
Can you use heavy duty hand cleaner without water?
Some can. Tub O’ Towels says no water is needed, and Fast Orange’s directions say to rub it in without water and wipe it off with a dry cloth. Zep TKO needs wet hands, and GOJO and Cherry Bomb call for a rinse.
Is Fast Orange or GOJO better?
On our spec score, Fast Orange: 9.6 to GOJO’s 7.4. Fast Orange is waterless, names six skin conditioners and a long list of soils. GOJO names dirt, oil and grease and no conditioners on its page.
What is the grit in hand cleaner?
Usually pumice, a volcanic rock ground into fine grit. Fast Orange says its pumice is extra fine. Tub O’ Towels uses walnut shell instead.
Does hand cleaner remove PVC cement?
None of these five names PVC cement. Fast Orange names gasket, tile and rubber cements, and Tub O’ Towels names adhesives and epoxies. Get it off before it cures.
Is Zep Cherry Bomb sold in California?
Zep’s page for the 48 oz Cherry Bomb says it isn’t available for sale in California. The other four picks carry no such note.
Does heavy duty hand cleaner kill germs?
These five are sold to remove grease and grime, and none of their listings claims to kill germs. After sewer work, my call is to use the hand cleaner, then plain soap and water.
Is Tub O’ Scrub the same as Tub O’ Towels hand cleaner?
Yes. The listing’s photo says the product has a new name and enhanced scent with the same performance. Both carry model TS18.
What does Fast Orange work on besides hands?
Permatex says it also works on scuff marks, tile floors and pet odors, and the smooth lotion, not the pumice one, on laundry stains.
Which hand cleaner has no solvents?
Three of the five say so: Tub O’ Towels (no solvents, no petroleum), Fast Orange (no petroleum solvents) and Zep TKO (solvent-free). GOJO says no harsh solvents. Zep Cherry Bomb’s listing says it contains solvents.
What dispenser does Zep TKO fit?
Zep’s page says the TKO gallon works with its D-4000 dispenser, and the 32 oz listing says that size is made for the D-1000.
How we picked these
Why trust me
I’m Isaac Daniels, a licensed journeyman plumber in Georgia (license #JP507711), and I’ve used all five picks. Every fact here comes from the makers’ product pages, technical and safety data sheets, pack labels and brand-written listings, read Oct 22, 2026. Where I add advice of my own, it’s labeled as my call.
How I pick
Only genuine brand heavy-duty hand cleaners, lotions or gels with a scrubber from a bottle or pump, new and in stock on Amazon, checked through Amazon’s product data the same night.
Facts from each maker’s own documents first, then its pack label and the listing text the brand wrote.
Each card’s spec score comes from the five checks below. All five score 7.0 or higher.
