Buy Scott Shop Towels Heavy Duty. Scott says they’re three times as strong wet as its Original towels, and it calls them solvent-resistant and reusable. Get the Scott Original for everyday wipe-ups, the Sellars Toolbox Z400 for a 30-roll case made in the USA, or Scott Glass for chrome trim and glass.
Top pick: Scott Shop Towels Heavy Duty$43.99 at AmazonPrice as of Oct 24, 2026, 5:30 AM EDT
Each one is the genuine brand, new and in stock on Amazon when we checked just after 1 a.m. on Oct 22, 2026, and each scored 7.0 or higher on our spec score.

How the four compare on our spec score
Five checks from each maker’s own spec pages, equal weight. The rules and every input are in the method section near the end.
PlumbingPicks spec score out of 10, from Kimberly-Clark’s Scott and Sellars’ own product pages, spec sheets and roll labels, read Oct 22, 2026. It is not a customer rating.
Heavy Duty wins on the two checks that matter most on a job: it has the biggest sheet, 11 by 10.4 in, and the only wet-strength figure measured against another shop towel. The Original and the Sellars Z400 share a sheet size and count, so they split on how each maker backs its wet claim.
Scott Glass has the most sheets per roll and the only low-lint claim. It loses points because Scott doesn’t sell it for oil or wet work.

You wipe threading oil, cutting oil and greasy fittings, mop up water when you drain a line, or want a towel you can rinse out and use again.

You’re wiping chrome trim or glass, where lint shows. The Scott Glass roll is made for that.
Scott Shop Towels Heavy Duty is the roll I’d keep on the truck first, and I’ve used it. This pack is 12 rolls of 60 towels, Kimberly-Clark’s item 32992, sold and shipped by Amazon when we checked. Scott also sells it in a box of 100 towels.
The reason to pay more for it is wet strength. Scott says Heavy Duty towels are three times as strong when wet as its own Original towels for cleaning up oil. That’s the only figure on this page measured against another shop towel, not a kitchen roll, so it scored a 10.
It’s made from a different sheet. Scott calls it Hydroknit. Kimberly-Clark’s chemical chart describes Hydroknit as cellulose fibers bonded into a polypropylene web with high-pressure water jets. The cellulose soaks up liquid and the plastic web gives it strength.
Scott says that build makes Heavy Duty solvent-resistant, reusable and strong when wet. The pack adds ‘durable for wet and dry jobs’. Scott doesn’t list which solvents it means, so test a corner before you soak one in a cleaner you haven’t used with it.
The sheet is the biggest here at 11 by 10.4 in, about 114 sq in. A roll holds about 48 sq ft of towel, against about 39 sq ft for a roll of the Original. That’s about 11% more towel in every sheet.
Two limits. Scott’s Heavy Duty page says nothing about lint, and it doesn’t list hands the way the Original’s page does. For pipe and tools it’s the one I’d reach for.
My call: buy Heavy Duty if you thread pipe, work around motor oil on pumps and burners, or drain lines onto a finished floor. Keep a roll of the Original for wiping hands.

You want one all-purpose roll for wiping fittings, hands, spills and drips, and you’d rather buy the size Scott sells the most of.

Most of your wiping is oil and solvent cleanup. Heavy Duty is three times as strong wet, per Scott.
Scott Shop Towels Original is the everyday roll, and I’ve used it. This pack is 12 rolls of 55 towels, 660 in all, sold and shipped by Amazon when we checked. Amazon also sells a 30-roll case and a 24-roll case of Big Rolls with 60 towels each.
Scott calls it the number one shop towel brand, citing Circana’s U.S. sales tracking for 2021 to 2023. That’s a sales claim, not a test, and it didn’t count toward the score.
What does count is wet strength and absorbency. Scott says the Original absorbs twice as much as the leading value brand kitchen paper towel and is twice as durable when wet. That comparison is against a kitchen towel, not another shop towel, so it scored a 9.
Kimberly-Clark’s spec page lists the uses: oil spills, changing oil, refilling fluids, large spills and leaks, and wiping dirt and liquid from face and hands. Scott adds a limit. It’s soft enough for hands, but not for broken skin or open cuts.
The sheet is 11 by 9.4 in, about 103 sq in, and each roll is perforated. Kimberly-Clark lists the roll itself at 11 by 4.56 by 4.56 in. Scott also sells it as a Pop-Up box of 200 sheets, which sits flat in a truck bin.
It lost points to Heavy Duty on sheet size, count and wet strength. It ties the Sellars Z400 on size and count. Scott makes no lint claim for it, and no solvent claim. On our score that’s the gap between its 8.0 and Heavy Duty’s 8.8.
My call: if you buy only one roll, buy this one. It’s the towel for wiping a fitting before it goes in, catching a drip off a supply stop, or cleaning your hands before you touch a customer’s faucet.

You run a shop or a few trucks, go through a lot of towels, and want a case of 30 made in the USA from recycled fiber.
Skip it if
You have no space for a 30-roll case, or you want a maker’s measured wet-strength figure. Scott publishes one; Sellars doesn’t.
The Sellars Toolbox Z400 is the roll I’d buy by the case, and I’ve used it. This is Sellars’ item 54400, 30 rolls of 55 sheets. PLEXSUPPLY was the Amazon seller when we checked. Sellars Absorbent Materials says the Z400 is made in the USA.
It’s the closest match to the Scott Original. The roll label gives an 11 by 9.4 in sheet and 39.5 sq ft per roll, the same sheet size as the Scott Original. Sellars’ own 2012 sales sheet even says ‘compare to Scott Shop Towels’. Sellars’ current web page rounds the sheet to 9 by 11 in.
Sellars lists the sheet as DRC. Kimberly-Clark’s chart explains the term: double re-creped tissue bonded with latex. The tissue gives softness and soaks up water. The latex soaks up oil and adds wet strength over a plain paper towel.
The roll says it absorbs oil and grease and is strong when wet. The sales sheet says it’s soft on hands and face and won’t fall apart, even when wet. Neither gives a number, so wet strength scored an 8, below Scott’s measured claims.
Sellars says the Z400 is made with up to 60% recycled fiber. Its 2012 sheet broke that down as 40% post-consumer and 10% pre-consumer, so the blend has moved. Sellars also says blue hides grease better than white, so you can use a towel longer before you toss it.
The case is big. Sellars lists it at 21.9 lb and about 23 by 14 by 23 in. It holds 1,650 sheets, two and a half times the Scott 12-roll pack.
My call: buy the Z400 case for a shop or a fleet. For one truck, a 12-roll Scott pack takes less room.

Buy it if
You set faucets, shower trim and mirrors and want the last wipe before the customer looks to leave no lint or streaks.
Skip it if
You need a towel for oil, grease or water. Scott doesn’t sell the Glass roll for those jobs.
Scott Shop Towels Glass is the finishing roll, and I’ve used it. This pack is 12 rolls of 90 towels, 1,080 in all, Kimberly-Clark’s item 32896, sold and shipped by Amazon when we checked.
It’s built for one thing: wiping without leaving fuzz. Scott says it leaves 20% less lint than the leading kitchen paper towel and is streak-free. Kimberly-Clark’s spec page adds that it’s made without binders or glue. That’s the only lint claim here, so it scored a 10 on lint.
Scott lists glass, windows, windshields, mirrors and chrome. For a plumber that’s the last step on a trim-out: polished chrome faucets, shower valves, tub spouts and the mirror above a new vanity. The pack itself says ‘for glass and chrome’ and ‘low lint, low streaking’.
Read the claim closely. Twenty percent less lint than a kitchen towel is low lint, not lint-free. Expect less lint, not none.
You get more towels per roll than anything else here, 90, and about 60 sq ft of towel per roll. The sheet is the smallest, 11 by 8.67 in, about 95 sq in. Kimberly-Clark lists the roll weight at 0.400, against 0.600 for the Original and 0.800 for Heavy Duty, so it’s the lightest of the three Scott rolls.
It scored lowest because Scott sells it for glass and chrome, not shop mess. Scott makes no oil, grease or wet-strength claim for it, and those checks scored a neutral 5. Don’t use it to soak up a drained water heater.
My call: keep one roll of Glass in the trim bag with the faucet boxes, and do the dirty wiping with the Original or Heavy Duty first. For tool care on chrome, see our channel locks on chrome page.

How a shop towel differs from a paper towel
Both are paper. A shop towel is made to hold together wet and to soak up oil, which a kitchen roll isn’t.
Built for: oil, grease and wet hands
Scott lists oil spills, changing oil, refilling fluids and wiping hands. Sellars lists grease, oil and spills in shops and fleet trucks.
Built for: holding together wet
Scott says the Original is twice as durable wet as a value kitchen towel, and Heavy Duty is three times as strong wet as the Original.
Not built for: the toilet
EPA’s septic care page lists paper towels among the things to never flush. Shop towels are paper towels made to stay in one piece.
Watch: rags wet with oil-based finishes
NFPA warns that rags wet with oil-based paint or stain can heat up and catch fire in a pile. Its steps are in the disposal section below.
The difference is the sheet. Sellars makes the Z400 from DRC, tissue bonded with latex; Kimberly-Clark’s chart says the latex adds oil absorbency and wet strength over a paper towel. Scott’s Heavy Duty is Hydroknit, cellulose locked into a plastic web.
My call: a kitchen roll is fine for a dry counter. For anything with water, oil or pipe dope on it, use a shop towel.

Read the first two rows together. Threading oil and water are the two messes a plumber wipes most, and Heavy Duty is the only roll with a maker’s claim on both oil and solvents plus a wet figure against another shop towel.
The Original covers hands, which Heavy Duty’s page doesn’t. That’s why a lot of trucks carry both. Our pipe threading oil page covers the oil itself.

From the Copper Development Association’s Copper Tube Handbook (soldering and brazing sections), Charlotte Pipe and Foundry’s TM-PL technical manual and Oatey’s Fusion Single Step PVC cement technical specification, read Oct 20 to 22, 2026.
The handbook says cotton rag for flux before heating, and I’d follow it. A shop towel is paper. Keep the roll out of the torch’s reach, and give the joint time to cool before you wipe flux residue off.
Sheet counts don’t compare well when the sheets differ in size. Square feet of towel does.
Our arithmetic: sheets per roll times sheet size, divided by 144. Sellars prints 39.5 sq ft on its roll, which matches. Sheet sizes and counts from each maker’s spec page or roll label, read Oct 22, 2026.

Two things stand out. Heavy Duty gives you about a fifth more towel per roll than the Original, on top of the wet strength. And the Original’s 30-roll case and the Sellars case hold the same amount of towel, so pick between those two on the other checks.

Lint: when it matters, and which roll is built for it
Lint shows on polished chrome, glass and dark matte trim. It doesn’t matter on a greasy threader.
From Scott’s Glass page and Kimberly-Clark’s 32896 spec page, read Oct 22, 2026. Not stated scores a neutral 5 of 10 on our lint check; the claim scores 10.
People search for lint-free paper towels, and no maker here claims lint-free. Scott Glass is the closest, with a measured claim against a kitchen towel. For the last wipe on a polished faucet, use Glass. For truly lint-free work, a microfiber cloth is a different product.

A roll on a holder is the easiest one-handed grab. A pop-up box or bucket is better where a roll would roll away or get dirty. My call: rolls on the truck, a pop-up box in the van door, and a bucket or wall dispenser in the shop.
Why shop towels are blue
It isn’t only branding. Sellars gives a practical reason.
Question
Blue towel
White towel
Hides grease and grime
Better, per Sellars
Shows every mark
Use before you throw it out
Longer, per Sellars
Shorter
Shows what you wiped up
Harder to read
Easy to see oil or rust
Sellars’ sales sheet says blue towels hide grease and grime better than white, so you can use one longer before you toss it. The flip side is that white shows what came off. On a leak hunt, a white towel tells you if the drip is clean water, rusty water or oil.
How to get rid of used shop towels safely
Two rules cover most of it: never flush them, and never pile up rags wet with oil-based finishes.
1
Never flush a shop towel
EPA’s septic care page says to flush only human waste and toilet paper, and lists paper towels as never flush.
2
Don’t leave finish-soaked rags in a pile
NFPA says rags wet with oil-based paint or stain give off heat as they dry and can catch fire in a pile.
3
Dry them outside, spread out
NFPA says to hang them or spread them on the ground, weighed down, away from buildings.
4
Store them in a closed metal can
Put dried rags in a metal container with a tight cover, filled with water and detergent, per NFPA.
5
Keep the can cool
Out of direct sun and away from other heat, per NFPA.
6
Ask your town
NFPA says to check with your town about disposal.
NFPA counts an average of 900 home fires a year started when oily rags catch fire or are lit. Its sheet is about oil-based paints, stains and flammable liquids; it says water-based finishes don’t do this.
We read each listing against the maker’s own pages. These are the gaps we found on Oct 22, 2026.

Questions people ask
What are shop towels?
Paper towels made to hold together wet and soak up oil and grease. Scott says its Original absorbs twice as much as the leading value kitchen paper towel and is twice as durable wet. Most are blue and come on perforated rolls.
What is the difference between shop towels and paper towels?
The sheet. Sellars makes its Z400 from DRC, tissue bonded with latex, and Kimberly-Clark says the latex adds oil absorbency and wet strength over a paper towel. Scott’s Heavy Duty is Hydroknit, cellulose in a plastic web.
Can you wash and reuse shop towels?
Scott calls its Heavy Duty towels reusable and solvent-resistant. It doesn’t give washing directions for any of its shop towels. My call: rinse and reuse a Heavy Duty towel for dirty jobs, and don’t run paper towels through a washer.
Are shop towels flushable?
No. EPA’s septic care page says to flush only human waste and toilet paper, and it lists paper towels as never flush. A shop towel is a paper towel made to stay in one piece, which is the opposite of what a sewer needs.
Are blue shop towels lint-free?
No maker here claims lint-free. Scott says its Glass towels leave 20% less lint than the leading kitchen paper towel and are made without binders or glue. That’s low lint. The others make no lint claim.
Why are shop towels blue?
Sellars says blue hides grease and grime better than white, so you can use a towel longer before you throw it out. A white towel shows what you wiped up, which helps on a leak hunt.
Are Scott shop towels food safe?
Scott’s pages list shop, automotive, glass and hand use. We found no food-contact listing on Scott’s or Kimberly-Clark’s pages, so use a kitchen towel for food.
How many towels are on a roll of Scott shop towels?
55 on the Original, 60 on Heavy Duty and on the Original Big Rolls, and 90 on Glass, per Scott and Kimberly-Clark. Sheet sizes differ, so compare square feet: about 39.5, 47.7 and 59.6 a roll.
What are the best shop towels for oil?
Scott Heavy Duty: Scott names oil cleanup and calls it solvent-resistant and three times as strong wet as the Original. The Original names oil spills, and the Sellars Z400 roll says it absorbs oil and grease.
Are Sellars shop towels as good as Scott?
On our spec score, the Sellars Toolbox Z400 scores 7.8 and the Scott Original 8.0. They share an 11 by 9.4 in sheet and 55 sheets a roll. Scott publishes a measured wet claim; Sellars says it’s made in the USA with up to 60% recycled fiber.
How do you dispose of oily shop towels?
For rags wet with oil-based paint, stain or flammable liquid, NFPA says dry them outside, spread out, then store them in a closed metal can of water and detergent, and check with your town on disposal. Never leave them in a pile.
How we picked these
Why trust me
I’m Isaac Daniels, a licensed journeyman plumber in Georgia (license #JP507711), and I’ve used all four picks. Every spec here comes from Scott’s, Kimberly-Clark Professional’s and Sellars’ own product pages, spec sheets and roll labels, read Oct 22, 2026. Where I add advice of my own, it’s labeled as my call.
How I pick
Only genuine brand blue paper shop towels on perforated rolls, new and in stock on Amazon, checked through Amazon’s product data the same night.
Each listing’s photo and pack size were matched to the maker’s own pages.
Specs from each maker’s spec page or roll label, not the listing. Where they differ, the gap is in the listing errors table.
Each card’s spec score comes from the five checks below. All four score 7.0 or higher.
