For a pressurized PVC water line, buy fittings from a Schedule 40 or 80 pressure-fitting line, not DWV drain fittings, and name every end: a coupling joins two same-size pipes, a reducer coupling joins two sizes, and a reducing bushing drops a fitting opening to a smaller size. Caps close a pipe end, plugs close a fitting opening. Spears and Charlotte both warn against testing PVC with compressed air; follow the maker’s water-test method.

A clear fitting order describes the system and connections before the shape. That helps prevent a DWV part or the wrong reducer from entering a pressure repair.
Seven pressure-fitting choices at a glance
| Fitting | Purpose | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Coupling | Join two pipe ends | Size, socket/thread form and any center stop |
| Reducer coupling | Join two different pipe sizes | Both end sizes and available installation length |
| Reducing bushing | Reduce a fitting connection | Spigot, socket or threaded form at each surface |
| Cap | Close an appropriate pipe end | Socket versus female thread |
| Plug | Close an appropriate fitting opening | Spigot versus male thread |
| Pressure tee | Add a branch | Run and branch sizes, connection order and pressure service |
| Pressure elbow | Change direction | Angle, connection forms and required layout |
Write out the actual connections rather than ordering by shape alone. Similar-looking fittings can belong to different systems.
Start with pressure service, not the white color
Identify the pipe material, size system and service before choosing a fitting. Charlotte Pipe identifies its Schedule 40 pressure-fitting system (charlottepipe.com) separately from DWV products. Schedule 40 in a listing is not enough to establish the assembled system’s pressure suitability.
Read markings and exact product documentation. Do not select a drain fitting for a pressurized line because it fits the pipe outside diameter. Likewise, a pressure elbow is not a general replacement for the required drainage pattern.
Our Schedule 40 versus Schedule 80 guide gives related context. Confirm the actual component and application rather than treating a schedule number as a complete specification.
Coupling, reducer coupling or reducing bushing?
A standard coupling joins two pipe ends of the stated size. A reducer coupling has different connection sizes at its ends. A reducing bushing fits the appropriate larger fitting opening and provides a smaller connection. These arrangements use different space and connection layouts.
Describe each end in order. A spigot-by-socket bushing is different from a socket-by-socket reducer coupling or a threaded bushing. The Charlotte pressure-pattern drawings (charlottepipe.com) distinguish these forms; use the exact size-specific listing for the final order.
Also identify whether a coupling has an internal stop. A standard stop coupling is not automatically a slide-over repair coupling for two fixed pipe ends. If the repair lacks assembly movement, choose an expressly supported repair method rather than removing a stop or forcing the pipe sideways.
For a specific same-size example, choose Spears 429-025 for a 2-1/2-inch socket-by-socket Schedule 40 PVC pressure joint. Its current maker table (parts.spearsmfg.com) and coupling catalog (parts.spearsmfg.com) identify that exact part. On October 15, 2026, the standard new Amazon offer matched model, part number and UPC and showed stock. Skip it for another size, a threaded connection or an unverified service.

Caps and plugs: identify what they actually close
A socket cap fits the matching pipe end; a female-threaded cap needs its specified male-threaded connection. A spigot plug fits a matching socket, while a male-threaded plug needs the appropriate female thread. Match the specific product rather than using cap and plug interchangeably.
Plan whether the closure must later be opened for service. A solvent-weld closure and a permitted threaded service opening solve different needs. Do not assume a permanent cap provides the access required by the plumbing design.
Verify suitability for the actual operating and test conditions. A temporary test closure, DWV cleanout component and permanent pressure-system closure are not equivalent because all can close an opening. Keep the package’s intended use with the order.
Pressure tees and elbows need the complete layout
Record each tee connection, including the branch. For a reducing tee, a single size such as “one inch” is incomplete. Use the maker’s stated connection order and compare it with the planned run and branch.
For an elbow, identify the required angle and whether each end is socket, spigot or threaded. A street arrangement changes the connection layout and space required. Do not substitute it based only on the turning angle.
Check the finished assembly’s alignment and support plan. Fittings should not be chosen to pull badly aligned pipe into place. Include thermal movement and the system designer’s requirements where relevant rather than forcing a short fitting stack to absorb them.
A pressure tee is not a sanitary tee simply because both provide a branch. Keep pressure-water and drainage fitting schedules separate so similar truck-stock parts do not become an accidental substitution.
Pressure ratings belong to the actual system
Read the specific component rating at the intended operating temperature and fluid conditions. A pipe rating does not establish that every fitting, union, valve and threaded connection has the same rating. Include surge conditions in the system design.
Spears’ design guidance (parts.spearsmfg.com) calls for temperature effects, fluid compatibility, threaded-joint considerations and hydraulic shock to be addressed. Use that maker’s applicable tables and the exact components rather than transferring one brand’s number to another.
There is no single pressure number for every Schedule 40 fitting in this guide. Confirm the full assembly and application with the designer or manufacturer. A rating found on a retailer’s generic family page is insufficient when it does not identify the selected size and connection.
Verify any drinking-water approval required for the job using the exact current product documentation and local requirements. A PVC label or a general statement about the brand does not establish acceptance of every product for every service.
Socket depth, assembly length and curing
Use the exact fitting’s drawing to plan insertion and finished length. Overall fitting length, socket depth and laying length are different dimensions. Measuring only the outside of a coupling can give the wrong pipe-cut plan.
Do not force a dry assembly fully together to establish the final fit. Follow the maker’s dry-fit and joining instructions, and reject parts outside the permitted fit. Keep the intended alignment and insertion requirements clear before applying cement.
Select primer and solvent cement for the actual material, size and service. Our PVC cement guide covers the related selection. The product’s current instructions still govern preparation, conditions and cure before testing or returning the system to service.
This guide gives no universal socket depth, cement quantity or cure time. Those depend on the actual components and conditions. A joint feeling firm or the outside appearing dry is not the specified cure-time check.
Inspection and the final purchase record
Keep the complete fitting identity with the job: maker, exact code, nominal sizes in order, material, pressure application and every end connection. Inspect the delivery for the markings and condition specified in the maker’s instructions.
Have the system isolated and depressurized through an appropriate safe work plan before repair. Use qualified help where needed. Do not tighten a leaking plastic threaded fitting further as a substitute for assessing the cause and permitted assembly method.
Charlotte’s pressure guidance prohibits compressed-air testing, and Spears warns against compressed-air or gas distribution and testing of these piping systems. Follow the actual maker’s approved testing process and local inspection requirements. Do not connect a compressor to find leaks.

Frequently asked questions
Are all Schedule 40 PVC fittings pressure rated?
No. Identify the exact fitting family and application. Schedule 40 DWV fittings must not be assumed suitable for a pressurized system.
Is a reducing bushing the same as a reducer coupling?
No. A bushing reduces an appropriate fitting opening; a reducer coupling joins different pipe sizes. Match every connection and the installation space.
Does a plug fit the same place as a cap?
Not automatically. Check whether the selected closure is socket, spigot, male threaded or female threaded and match its intended opening.
Can pipe pressure rating be used for the entire assembly?
No. Verify the applicable ratings and conditions for every component and the assembled system, including temperature and surge effects.
Can I air-test a PVC pressure repair?
Follow the exact maker’s approved testing process. The cited Charlotte and Spears guidance warns against compressed-air testing of these systems.
How we chose
