Quick answer from a licensed plumber: For the pressure test on new gas piping, a Winters PET gas test gauge in a range no more than five times your test pressure: the 0-30 psi PETG202 for tests of 6 psi and up (a 3 psi test needs a 0-15 psi gauge). For appliance gas pressure in inches of water column, the Klein ET180 digital manometer. A manometer like the ET180 is not a line-test gauge: Klein lists a 2.16 psi maximum.
Our pick for the line test: the Winters PETG202 0-30 psi gas test gauge assembly. Check the Winters PETG202 on Amazon
Gas work needs two different gauges, and buyers mix them up. A test gauge reads psi and goes on new piping for the pressure test the inspector checks. A manometer reads inches of water column, the low pressure that gas appliances run on, and checks the inlet and manifold pressure on a water heater, furnace or range. This page covers both, using only Winters, Klein and testo documents and the model-code text, with picks Amazon.com sold when we checked.

What the Code Says About the Test
These are sections of the 2024 International Residential Code’s fuel gas chapter, read in the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association Residential Code 2024 on UpCodes. The International Fuel Gas Code numbers the same rules 406.4 and 406.4.1; its 406.4.2 sets the duration differently, as noted below. Your state or city may use another edition or amend it, and the inspector has the final word.
- Test pressure (G2417.4.1): not less than 1-1/2 times the proposed maximum working pressure, but not less than 3 psig.
- Gauge range (G2417.4): test pressure is measured with a manometer or a device designed to show a pressure loss from leakage, and a mechanical gauge’s highest scale value can be no more than five times the test pressure. The source of pressure is isolated before the test.
- Duration (G2417.4.2): not less than 10 minutes. The International Fuel Gas Code’s 406.4.2 instead sets half an hour for each 500 cubic feet of pipe volume, with 10 minutes for a system under 10 cubic feet or in a single-family dwelling (2009 edition, as quoted in a City of Alexandria, Virginia policy).
- Test medium and appliances (IFGC 406.2 and 406.3.3, 2009 text quoted by Alexandria): the test medium is air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide or an inert gas, never oxygen. Appliances designed for less than the test pressure are disconnected and their outlets capped before the test.
- Local rules differ. One example: Alexandria’s 2017 policy says that for typical systems up to 5 psi it requires a gauge of 30 psi or less, and that replacing gas equipment needs a permit under the Virginia Construction Code.
Pick the Gauge Range From the Test Pressure
| Gauge range | Lowest test pressure allowed under the 5x rule (our arithmetic) | Winters 75% working limit (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|
| 0-15 psi (PETG201) | 3 psi | 11.25 psi |
| 0-30 psi (PETG202) | 6 psi | 22.5 psi |
| 0-60 psi (PETG203) | 12 psi | 45 psi |
| 0-100 psi (PETG204) | 20 psi | 75 psi |
Plumber’s note: a gauge with too big a range hides a slow leak, because a small drop barely moves the needle. Ask the inspector the test pressure first, then buy the gauge.
Checking Appliance Gas Pressure
Plumber’s note: this is a service check, not a homeowner adjustment. Do not turn regulator or gas valve screws unless you are qualified to; wrong gas pressure is a fire and carbon monoxide risk.
- Find the numbers. The appliance rating plate and installation manual list the inlet and manifold pressures to check.
- Zero the meter, then connect the manometer tubing to the test port on the gas valve. Klein’s manual says to press Zero before taking pressure readings.
- Read static and running pressure. Plumber’s note: read it with the appliance off, then running, and with other gas appliances on, because a drop under load points to an undersized line or regulator.
- Close the port and leak-check it with a leak-detecting solution before you leave.
Winters PET Series Gas Test Gauge (PETG202 0-30 psi, PETG203 0-60 psi)
2 in. dial · dual scale psi/kPa · gauge and valve body assembly with bleed port · 3/4 in. NPTF connection · ±3-2-3% (ASME Grade B) · ranges 0-15 to 0-160 psi in the series · working pressure up to 75% of full scale · IP52 · 5-year warranty
This is the classic test gauge assembly: a gauge on a valve body with a bleed port, threaded 3/4 inch NPTF so it goes on the end of the new piping. Winters lists residential and commercial pressure testing of natural gas, air and water lines as its uses. The series runs 0-15, 0-30, 0-60, 0-100 and 0-160 psi, and Winters gives a 5-year warranty.
Pick the range from your test pressure, not the biggest number. The model code says a mechanical gauge’s top end can be no more than five times the test pressure, so a 0-30 gauge suits tests of 6 psi or more and a 0-60 gauge tests of 12 psi or more (our arithmetic). Winters also says to keep working pressure to 75 percent of full scale: 22.5 psi on the 0-30 and 45 psi on the 0-60 (our arithmetic). For a 3 psi test you would need the 0-15 psi PETG201, which we do not link here.
- Made for gas, air and water line tests, per Winters
- Bleed port on the valve body
- 5-year warranty, per Winters
- Range options from 0-15 to 0-160 psi
- ±3-2-3% accuracy is Grade B, not a digital reading
- No link here for the 0-15 psi PETG201 that a 3 psi test needs
- Analog: you watch the needle for the whole test
Verdict: The gauge to put on a new gas line for the inspector’s test, in a range matched to your required test pressure.
Klein Tools ET180 Digital Differential Manometer
Two ports: P1, P2 and differential · ±60 inH2O range (2.16 psi max on Klein’s page; ±2.175 psi in the manual’s table) · ±1.5% full scale · 11 units including inH2O and psi · min, max and average · hold · backlit screen · magnet on back · 2 m of 1/8 in. silicone tubing · 3 AAA batteries · auto power off after 15 minutes (can be turned off)
The ET180 is for the low pressures that gas appliances run on, measured in inches of water column. Klein says it measures air and gas pressure on port 1, port 2 and the difference between them, and toggles between 11 units. It shows minimum, maximum and average values, has a hold button, and a magnet on the back so it hangs on a water heater or furnace cabinet while you read it.
Know its ceiling. Klein lists a ±60 inH2O range and a maximum of 2.16 psi on its page (the manual’s table shows ±2.175 psi), so it cannot read a 3 psi line test. It auto-powers off after 15 minutes of inactivity, and the manual explains how to turn that off when you need a longer reading. Klein says it is not insulated and to know the characteristics of the gas you are working with.
- Reads inches of water column directly
- Port 1, port 2 and differential
- Min, max and average values
- Magnet for hands-free reading
- Top end 2.16 psi: not for line pressure tests
- Not insulated, per Klein
- Klein lists indoor use
Verdict: The manometer to check inlet and manifold pressure on a gas water heater, furnace or range against the rating plate.

Also Considered: testo 510
testo’s 510 is a pocket-size differential pressure meter. Its data sheet lists a 0 to 100 hPa range (about 40 inH2O, our arithmetic) with temperature compensation, 10 selectable units including inH2O and psi, a backlit display, magnets on the back, IP40 protection and a 50-hour battery life measured without display illumination. Like the Klein, it is a low-pressure instrument: testo lists a maximum positive pressure of 500 mbar, so it is not a line-test gauge. We name it as a compact alternative and do not link it.
Before You Buy
- Know which job. A line test needs a psi test gauge; appliance pressure needs a manometer. The manometers here cannot read a 3 psi test.
- Match the range. Keep the gauge top end within five times the test pressure, per the model code.
- Check the connection. The Winters PETG gauges use a 3/4 in. NPTF connection; plan your test fitting and a shutoff.
- Watch the auto power-off. The Klein ET180 shuts off after 15 minutes idle unless you turn that feature off.
- Ask about the permit. Permit, license and test rules are set locally. Call your building department before you buy a gauge or cut pipe.

FAQ
What pressure do you test a gas line at?
The 2024 International Residential Code says not less than 1-1/2 times the proposed maximum working pressure, and not less than 3 psig (G2417.4.1; the International Fuel Gas Code’s 406.4.1 reads the same). Your state or city may use another edition or amend it, so ask your inspector before you set up the test. The code also says the source of pressure must be isolated before the test starts.
How long does a residential gas pressure test have to hold?
The 2024 International Residential Code (G2417.4.2) says not less than 10 minutes. The International Fuel Gas Code ties duration to pipe volume, with 10 minutes for a single-family dwelling. Your local code or inspector can require longer, so confirm the duration with them.
What range gas test gauge should I buy?
Match it to the test pressure. The 2024 International Residential Code (G2417.4) says a mechanical gauge’s highest scale value can be no more than five times the test pressure. That means a 0-15 gauge works down to a 3 psi test, a 0-30 down to 6 psi, and a 0-60 down to 12 psi (our arithmetic).
Can a manometer do the gas line pressure test?
The code allows a manometer, but the ones here read low pressures only. Klein lists a 2.16 psi maximum on the ET180, and the testo 510 tops out at 100 hPa, so neither can read a 3 psi test. Use a psi test gauge for the line test and the manometer for appliance pressure.
Do I need a license to test or work on gas piping?
That depends on your state and city, so call your building department before you start. One example: Alexandria, Virginia’s code office says a permit is required when gas equipment is replaced, and that the permit holder does the leak checks. Plumber’s note: if you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
