Quick answer from a licensed plumber: On an Amtrol tank the letters give the family: WX is Well-X-Trol (150 psig), CH is Champion and PL is Pro-Line (both 125 psig). On Champion and Pro-Line tanks the number is the gallons (CH-20 is 20 gallons); on Well-X-Trol it is not (the 20-gallon tank is the WX-202). Same-size tanks share dimensions: WX-202, CH-20 and PL-20 are all about 15 by 32 inches. If you are replacing one with a tank sold by Amazon, our well pressure tank picks size Red Lion tanks by fixture count.
Read the Letters First
| Prefix | Amtrol family | Working pressure | Max relief valve setting | Warranty | What the number means |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| WX | Well-X-Trol | 150 psig | 125 psig | 7 years | A model code: WX-202 is 20 gal |
| CH | Champion | 125 psig | 100 psig | 5 years | The gallons: CH-20 is 20 gal |
| PL | Pro-Line | 125 psig | 100 psig | 5 years | The gallons: PL-20 is 20 gal |
All three are Amtrol diaphragm tanks with a 38 psig factory precharge, per Amtrol’s submittals. Amtrol describes Champion and Pro-Line as tanks that “All feature 125 PSIG working pressure, a stainless steel connector, patented Turbulator® and a 5-year limited warranty.” The submittals list the Champion finish as dark blue and the Pro-Line as tan, while the Well-X-Trol comes in blue, tan or gray.
Same Size Across the Three Families
Amtrol’s stand-model submittals show the same volume, diameter, height and connection for each size in all three families:
| Gallons | Well-X-Trol | Champion | Pro-Line | Diameter x height (in.) | Connection (NPTF) | Well-X-Trol drawdown at 30/50 (gal) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 | WX-201 | CH-14 | PL-14 | 15 x 25 | 1″ | 4.3 |
| 20 | WX-202 | CH-20 | PL-20 | 15 x 32 | 1″ | 6.2 |
| 26 | WX-202XL | CH-26 | PL-26 | 15 x 39 | 1″ | 8.0 |
| 32 | WX-203 | CH-32 | PL-32 | 15 x 47 | 1″ | 9.9 |
| 34 | WX-205 | CH-34 | PL-34 | 22 x 30 | 1-1/4″ | 10.5 |
| 44 | WX-250 | CH-44 | PL-44 | 22 x 36 | 1-1/4″ | 13.6 |
| 62 | WX-251 | CH-62 | PL-62 | 22 x 47 | 1-1/4″ | 19.2 |
| 81 | WX-255 | CH-81 | PL-81 | 22 x 57 | 1-1/4″ | 25.0 |
| 86 | WX-302 | CH-86 | PL-86 | 26 x 47 | 1-1/4″ | 26.6 |
| 119 | WX-350 | CH-119 | PL-119 | 26 x 62 | 1-1/4″ | 36.8 |
The drawdown column is from Amtrol’s Well-X-Trol sizing guide. The Champion and Pro-Line submittals we read do not print drawdown, so we have not filled it in for them. Amtrol notes that “All dimensions and weights are approximate.”
No Label? Measure the Tank
- Measure across the tank. On these stand models, Amtrol lists three diameters: about 15, 22 or 26 inches.
- Measure the height and find it in that diameter group. A 15-inch tank about 32 inches tall matches the 20-gallon row (WX-202, CH-20, PL-20).
- Check the connection. The 15-inch stand tanks have a 1-inch connection; the 22- and 26-inch tanks have 1-1/4-inch.
Smaller Well-X-Trol tanks that sit in the line rather than on a stand (WX-101 to WX-104 and WX-200) are in our well tank size chart.

Other Letters on a Well-X-Trol
- XL: the WX-202XL is the 26-gallon version of the 15-inch tank.
- PS and H: horizontal models. Amtrol lists “WX-102PS through WX-110PS” and “WX-200PS, WX-202PS and WX-202H” among its horizontal tanks.
- UG: underground models, such as the WX-200UG and WX-250UG.
- PA: Pro Access, as in the WX-200PA and WX-300PA submittal.
- G or T: color. The submittal says “Available in gray. Use suffix G.” and “Available in Tan and Gray. Use suffix T or G.”
Replacing One Family with Another
Same size means the same footprint and connection. The ratings are what differ: a Champion or Pro-Line tank is rated for 125 psig working pressure and a maximum relief valve setting of 100 psig, against 150 and 125 psig for a Well-X-Trol. Whoever installs it has to set the relief valve for the tank that goes in. All three leave the factory at 38 psig, so the precharge has to be set for your switch: Amtrol’s rule is “2 psig below the pressure switch pump cut-in setting.” Our 30/50 vs 40/60 guide explains that setting, and our well pump pressure switch guide compares replacement switches.
FAQ
What size is an Amtrol WX-202?
Amtrol lists the WX-202 at 20 gallons, about 15 inches across and 32 inches tall, with a 1-inch NPTF connection and 6.2 gallons of drawdown at 30/50.
Is a Champion CH-20 the same as a WX-202?
Same size: Amtrol lists both at 20 gallons, 15 by 32 inches, with a 1-inch connection. The ratings differ: the CH-20 is rated for 125 psig working pressure and a 5-year warranty, the WX-202 for 150 psig and 7 years.
What does the number mean on an Amtrol Champion or Pro-Line tank?
The tank volume in gallons. A CH-32 or PL-32 is a 32-gallon tank. On Well-X-Trol tanks the number is a model code: the 32-gallon Well-X-Trol is the WX-203.
How do I find the size of my well tank without a label?
Measure its diameter and height and match them to Amtrol’s table. Stand models come about 15, 22 or 26 inches across; a 15-inch tank about 32 inches tall is the 20-gallon size.
What is the factory precharge on an Amtrol well tank?
38 psig on Well-X-Trol, Champion and Pro-Line tanks. Amtrol says to set it 2 psi below the pump cut-in pressure, and that only licensed professionals should check or adjust it.

Bottom Line
Read the prefix, then the number: CH and PL numbers are gallons, WX numbers are model codes. No label? Measure the diameter and height and match the table. Same size across families fits the same space, but the pressure ratings differ, and the relief valve and precharge must be set for the tank that goes in, by a licensed professional.
