Almost every week, someone asks me some version of the same thing: “Do I actually need a water softener, or is that just an upsell?” It’s a fair question. Softeners aren’t cheap, the internet is full of pages written by companies that sell them, and most of those pages only answer for one situation — city water, or well water, or a tankless heater — when what you really want to know is whether your house needs one.

So here’s the straight version, the way I’d tell a customer standing in their basement. The whole decision comes down to one number you can measure for about ten bucks, plus a couple of details about your setup. Let’s get you to a real answer.

The 30-second answer

Test your water hardness first — everything depends on that number.

  • Under ~7 grains per gallon (gpg): You probably don’t need a softener. Save your money.
  • 7–10 gpg (“hard”): A softener is worth considering — you’ll see and feel the difference, and it starts protecting your water heater and appliances.
  • Over ~10–15 gpg (“very hard”): A softener usually pays for itself in protected appliances, lower energy bills, and fewer repairs. This is the clear “yes.”

Then layer in your setup: a tankless water heater or a well pushes you toward “yes” sooner; city water doesn’t exempt you (cities treat for safety, not hardness); and a reverse-osmosis system or whole-house filter is not a substitute — those do a different job. Details on each below.

First, test your water (don’t skip this)

I won’t tell anyone to buy a softener before they know their hardness, and you shouldn’t let anyone else, either. There are three easy ways to get the number:

  1. Pull your utility’s Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). If you’re on city/municipal water, your provider publishes an annual water-quality report — it’s free, usually online, and often lists hardness. (If it’s listed in mg/L or ppm, divide by 17.1 to get grains per gallon.)
  2. Use a test strip. A few dollars, dip it, match the color, and you have your gpg in about 30 seconds. This is the move for well owners (no CCR) and anyone who wants to verify what’s actually coming out of their tap. Once you have the number, match it to the U.S. Geological Survey’s classification — this is the federal standard everyone uses:

Do I need a water softener with city water?

Short answer: maybe — your city treats your water for safety, not for hardness. This trips a lot of people up. “It’s city water, it’s already treated” — true, but treated means disinfected and made safe to drink. Municipal plants don’t remove the dissolved calcium and magnesium that make water hard, because hardness isn’t a health hazard. Plenty of cities deliver perfectly safe water that’s also genuinely hard.

So city water doesn’t get you off the hook. The scale still forms — on your heating element, in your faucet aerators, on the glass shower door you keep scrubbing. The only way to know is to check your number (your CCR lists it) and decide from there. If your city water is under ~7 gpg, you’re fine. If it’s running 10, 15, 20 gpg — and a lot of municipal supplies do — a softener does exactly the same job it would on a well.

Do I need a water softener with well water?

Short answer: very likely — but test for iron first, because a softener alone may not be enough. Wells are where I see the hardest water and the most “softener won’t fix everything” surprises. Two things to sort out:

  • Hardness — wells pull water straight through rock, so they often run hard or very hard. A softener handles this the same as anywhere.
  • Iron and sediment — this is the part the city-water pages never cover. Many wells also carry iron (the orange/brown staining in toilets and tubs) and sediment. A standard softener can handle a small amount of “clear-water” iron, but past roughly a few parts per million — or if you’ve got ferric (already-rusted, orange) or bacterial iron — you need an iron filter ahead of the softener, not a softener alone. Run the wrong setup and you’ll foul the softener resin and be back to staining in months.

So on a well: test for hardness AND iron before you buy. A multi-parameter strip or a lab panel tells you whether you need a softener, an iron filter, or the combination most well homes end up running.

Do I need a water softener for a tankless water heater?

Short answer: this is the strongest “yes” on the list — tankless units are more scale-sensitive, not less. If you have or are buying a tankless heater and your water is hard, treat the water. Here’s why it matters more than with a tank:

A tankless heater forces water through a narrow heat exchanger and heats it fast. Those tight passages scale up quicker than the open bottom of a tank, and even a thin layer of scale chokes flow and efficiency. That’s why most manufacturers require annual descaling on hard water to keep the warranty valid — and why skipping treatment can trade a slow decline for a sudden, expensive failure. On a tank you get years of quiet efficiency loss; on a tankless you can lose the unit.

If you’re running hard water through a tankless (or about to), a softener is the cleanest long-term protection, and it’s the case where the math is easiest to justify. At minimum, budget for the descaling the manufacturer requires.

Do I still need a softener if I have reverse osmosis or a whole-house filter?

Short answer: yes, if your water is hard — RO and filters do a different job. This is the single most common mix-up I run into, so let’s be precise:

  • A water softener removes hardness (calcium and magnesium) from the water feeding your whole house — it’s a point-of-entry (POE) treatment that protects your plumbing, heater, and appliances.
  • A reverse-osmosis system is usually a point-of-use (POU) unit under one sink, polishing drinking water by stripping out a wide range of contaminants. It treats a gallon at a time at one faucet — it does nothing for the scale building up in your water heater across the house.   • A whole-house carbon/sediment filter improves taste, smell, and clarity house-wide, but a standard carbon filter doesn’t remove hardness either.

So “I have an RO system, am I covered?” — not for hardness, no. If your goal is great drinking water, RO is excellent. If your goal is stopping scale and protecting appliances, that’s the softener’s job. Many homes with hard water run both: softener for the whole house, RO under the kitchen sink.

Regional reality — and “is it worth it in Florida / the Southwest?”

Where you live is a strong hint, but it’s never a substitute for testing your own tap. The hardest water in the country runs through the Southwest, the Mountain West, and a wide Midwest limestone belt — if you’re in those areas, odds are high you’re hard or very hard. Coastal and mountain-runoff regions tend softer.

Florida is the question I get most, and the honest answer is “it depends on your part of Florida.” Much of the state sits on limestone aquifers and delivers genuinely hard water, which is why softeners are common there — but pockets run moderate. Same rule applies: pull your number, then decide. Your ZIP code narrows the odds; the test settles it.

Is a water softener actually worth it?

If your water is hard, the value isn’t really about silky showers — it’s about everything downstream. Here’s the case the data actually makes:

Hard water scales up your water heater, and that scale costs you. “But do I need a softener, or a salt-free conditioner?”

Quick flag, because it changes the answer: a salt-free “conditioner” or “descaler” is not a softener. It doesn’t remove hardness — it conditions the minerals so they’re less likely to stick as scale. That can be a reasonable middle path in some homes (no salt, no wastewater, low maintenance), but if you specifically want soft water — better lather, no spotting, softer laundry — only an ion-exchange softener actually delivers it.
