How hard is your water? Water hardness measures the dissolved calcium and magnesium in your water, reported in milligrams per liter (mg/L, the same as ppm) or grains per gallon (gpg). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) sorts it into four levels:

  • Soft — 0–60 mg/L (0–3.5 gpg)
  • Moderately hard — 61–120 mg/L (3.6–7.0 gpg)
  • Hard — 121–180 mg/L (7.1–10.5 gpg)
  • Very hard — more than 180 mg/L (10.5+ gpg)

To convert units, 1 grain per gallon ≈ 17.1 mg/L. Hard water is most common across the east-central and western United States.

I’ve pulled apart enough water heaters and faucets to usually call the hardness of a home’s water before I ever see a test — the crusty white scale on fixtures and heating elements gives it away. “Hard” water just means it’s carrying dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium, picked up as it moved through rock and soil. It won’t hurt you to drink, but it’s rough on your plumbing, your appliances, and your water bills. Here’s the scale I actually use, how to find your own number, and what to do about it.

The mg/L bands are the USGS classification. The grains-per-gallon column is those same bands converted at the standard 1 gpg = 17.1 mg/L. “mg/L” and “ppm” mean the same thing for water hardness.

How to find your water’s hardness (three ways)

  1. Check your utility’s Water Quality Report. City water systems publish an annual report (the Consumer Confidence Report). Because hardness isn’t a health-regulated contaminant, it isn’t always listed — if it’s missing, call the utility and ask. Most operators know their number off the top of their head.
  2. Use a home test strip. A cheap pack of hardness strips gives you a gpg reading in seconds — accurate enough to size a softener.
  3. On a private well? Test it. Wells aren’t covered by any utility report, and well hardness swings a lot by area. A mail-in lab test is worth the money.

Where hard water is most common in the U.S.

The USGS reports that hard water is most prevalent across the east-central and western United States — it follows the geology, especially limestone and other carbonate rock that dissolves into groundwater. Water tends to be softest where the bedrock is harder, less-soluble granite, which is why regions like much of the Northeast and the Pacific Northwest run soft (though there are hard-water pockets everywhere — Florida’s limestone, for one). One honest caveat: USGS is explicit that a national map can’t tell you your home’s number — two houses on different wells in the same county can read very differently. Use the map as a rough guide, then test your own.

What hard water actually does (and what it costs)

Every grain of hardness leaves a little mineral behind. Over the years that becomes scale — inside pipes, on faucet aerators, on the heating element and tank of your water heater, and on your glassware. Scale narrows pipes, makes water heaters work harder and fail sooner, and eats through soap. None of it is dangerous; all of it is a slow tax on your home. Do you need a water softener?

Rule of thumb from the field: in the moderately-hard range (about 3.6–7 gpg) it’s a judgment call; once you’re solidly hard (7+ gpg / 120+ mg/L), a softener usually pays for itself in longer-lasting appliances and less cleaning. Sizing comes down to two numbers — your water’s grains per gallon and how much water your household uses in a day. Get your gpg first (see above), then match it to a system sized for your home.

What is a good water hardness level?

Anything in the soft to moderately-hard range — under about 120 mg/L (7 gpg) — is comfortable to live with. USGS classifies water under 60 mg/L as “soft.”

Is 7 grains per gallon hard water?

Right at the line. 7 gpg is about 120 mg/L, the top of the “moderately hard” band; anything above that USGS calls “hard.” It’s the point where most plumbers, me included, start recommending a softener.

How do I convert grains per gallon to ppm (mg/L)?

Multiply by 17.1. So 10 gpg × 17.1 ≈ 171 mg/L. To go the other way, divide mg/L by 17.1.

Which states have the hardest water?

Is hard water bad for you?
