Both of these exist for the same reason: nobody wants to hold a torch inside a wall cavity. SharkBite pushes on by hand. ProPress crimps in about five seconds with a tool that costs more than most people’s first car repair. They solve the same problem from opposite ends of the budget.

The decision is almost entirely about how many joints you are going to make in your life — and there is a specific myth about SharkBite that is worth clearing up with the actual listing number.
The short answer
Doing this for a living: ProPress. Faster per joint, far cheaper per fitting, and it presses wet lines you could never solder.
SharkBite behind a wall is allowed — push-to-connect fittings are covered by ASSE 1061, the performance standard that approves them for underground and behind-the-wall use, certified by IAPMO, NSF and CSA under both the UPC and IPC. The trade’s caution is about install quality, not the fitting.
Neither is a compromise on the joint itself. Both seal on an O-ring, both are code-listed, both fail the same way when the tube is cut badly.
How each one actually works
SharkBite — push-to-connect
Inside the brass body: a stainless steel grab ring with teeth that bite the tube and stop it pulling out, and an EPDM O-ring that does the sealing. You cut the tube, deburr it, mark the insertion depth, and push until it stops. That is the whole install.
The underrated advantage: one fitting works on copper, PEX, CPVC and PE-RT. Transitioning between materials — the exact situation that makes repairs miserable — needs no special adapter. For PEX you add the stiffener sleeve; on copper you do not.
They also come apart. A disconnect clip releases the grab ring, and the fitting can be reused. No other permanent-rated system does that.
ProPress — press-connect
A fitting with an O-ring already in the socket. The tube goes in, a powered jaw closes around it, and roughly four to seven seconds later the fitting is permanently deformed onto the pipe. Governed by ASME B16.51, and it works on Type K, L or M copper without changing anything.
The thing press does that nothing else does: it presses a line that still has water weeping through it. You cannot solder a wet joint. That single capability is why press took over service work.

The economics, plainly
SharkBite has the highest cost per fitting and the lowest cost to start. ProPress inverts that: the fittings are much cheaper than push-fit, but you cannot make a single joint until you have bought the tool.
So the crossover is not really about fittings at all — it is about labor time. A pro pressing dozens of joints a day recovers the tool in saved hours, not in fitting savings. A homeowner making eight joints will never recover it, and should not try. The behind-the-wall question, settled properly
This is where most advice goes vague, so here is the specific position.
The code answer: push-to-connect fittings are governed by ASSE 1061, the performance standard for push-fit fittings, which approves them for underground and behind-the-wall applications. SharkBite states its fittings meet the Uniform Plumbing Code and International Plumbing Code and are certified by IAPMO, NSF and CSA. So “you can’t hide a SharkBite” is, as a code statement, simply wrong.
The trade answer, and why it is not a contradiction: plenty of plumbers still will not conceal one, and their reasoning is sound. A push-fit joint’s integrity depends entirely on things you cannot see afterward — whether the tube was cut square, whether it was deburred, whether it was pushed fully to the depth mark, whether the pipe was scored. A press joint is verified by the tool; a soldered joint is verified by the solder line. A push-fit joint is verified by the installer having done it right.
What I would actually tell you: the listing is real and you are allowed to do it. If you conceal one, mark the depth on the tube before inserting so you can see it went all the way, and pressure-test before the drywall goes up, which the manufacturer recommends anyway. Where you have the choice, keeping push-fit joints accessible costs nothing and removes the only real variable.
What fails, on both
The failure mode is nearly identical, which surprises people:
- A bad cut. Out of square, or burred, and the O-ring gets nicked on the way in. This is the number one cause on both systems. Use a proper cutter, deburr every time.
- Not fully inserted. Push-fit needs the depth mark; press needs the tube seated to the shoulder before the jaw closes.
- A scored or out-of-round pipe. An old tube crushed by a pipe wrench will not seal on either.
- The forgotten joint. Press systems build in leak-before-press detection so an unpressed fitting shows itself under test. Push-fit has no equivalent — which is one more argument for pressure-testing before you close anything up.
So which should you buy?
A handful of joints, mixed materials: SharkBite. The copper-to-PEX transition alone justifies it.
A whole-house repipe in copper: ProPress, or hire someone who owns the tool.
Service and repair for a living: ProPress. Wet-line pressing pays for the tool by itself.
Concealed joints: either is listed — but press is verified by the tool, and that is worth something behind drywall.

Yes, using the disconnect clip or tongs that release the grab ring. This is unique among permanent-rated systems — a press joint has to be cut out. Inspect the O-ring before reusing a fitting, and do not reuse one that was installed on a scored pipe.
Do SharkBite and ProPress work on wet lines?
Both can be installed on a line that is still weeping, which is the main reason each displaced soldering for repair work. You cannot solder a wet joint at all. Shut off and drain what you reasonably can, but neither system requires a bone-dry pipe.
What actually makes a push-fit or press joint leak?
Almost always the tube, not the fitting: a cut that is out of square, a burr that nicks the O-ring on insertion, a pipe not pushed fully to the depth mark, or an old tube that has been crushed out of round. Cut square, deburr every time, seat fully, and pressure-test before sealing anything up.
