Vault K-3943 (35-1/2 in.)18-gauge stainless; short apron32-1/2 × 17-3/16 × 9 in.36 in. standard base

The biggest difference between Kohler farmhouse sinks is the apron height. A tall apron needs an apron-front sink base cabinet with a lowered front. A short apron, on the Whitehaven K-5664 and Vault K-3943, is designed so the sink can go into most standard cabinets or be retrofitted into an existing one. All four have Kohler’s Self-Trimming apron, which overlaps the cabinet face.

Kohler Whitehaven K-5827: 33-inch cast iron, tall apron

Choose the Whitehaven K-5827 for a classic tall-apron cast iron sink in a 33-inch apron cabinet. Kohler’s spec sheet (resources.kohler.com) lists enameled cast iron, a single bowl 27-3/4 × 18-1/16 inches, a bowl that slopes toward an offset drain, a 3-5/8-inch drain hole, undermount installation with cutout templates included, and a 33-inch minimum apron sink base cabinet.

Kohler lists a 9-inch water depth and an 8-13/16-inch bowl depth in the same sheet. It also notes that the distance from the top edge of the cabinet to the top of the cabinet door must be at least 9 inches. The drain and strainer are listed accessories, not included.

Kohler Whitehaven K-5664: 24-inch, short apron

Choose the Whitehaven K-5664 for a small farmhouse sink in a standard 24-inch cabinet. Kohler’s spec sheet (resources.kohler.com) lists enameled cast iron, a single bowl 18-13/16 × 18-1/16 × 9 inches, a center drain, a 3-5/8-inch drain hole, a shortened apron so it can go into most standard cabinetry or be retrofitted, undermount installation with templates included, and a 24-inch minimum base cabinet.

Because the apron is shorter, Kohler lists a smaller clearance: at least 6-7/8 inches from the top edge of the cabinet to the top of the door. Its 24-inch size makes it the option here for a bar, prep area or small kitchen.

Kohler Vault K-3943: stainless, short apron

Choose the Vault K-3943 for a stainless farmhouse sink that fits a standard 36-inch cabinet. It includes installation hardware and a K-6474 bottom sink rack.

Kohler notes that the back 1-inch rim flange needs at least 3 inches of clearance for clip attachment, while the 3/4-inch side flanges are supported without clips.

Tall apron or short apron?

A tall-apron sink, like the Whitehaven K-5827 or Riverby K-24564, needs a base cabinet built for an apron-front sink, with a lowered face frame and enough height above the doors; Kohler lists 9 inches for the K-5827. A short-apron sink, like the Whitehaven K-5664 or Vault K-3943, is the easier retrofit: Kohler says it can go into most standard cabinets. Whichever you choose, the countertop cutout must be made from Kohler’s current template.

Measure before you order

Check four things. First, the cabinet width: 24, 33 or 36 inches depending on the sink. Second, for a tall-apron sink, the height from the top of the cabinet to the top of the doors, which Kohler lists as at least 9 inches for the Whitehaven K-5827. Third, the faucet: none of the four sheets lists faucet holes, so the faucet mounts through the countertop behind the sink or on the wall.

Fourth, the drain position: the Whitehaven K-5827 and Riverby have offset drains, the K-5664 a center drain and the Vault a rear drain, which changes where the trap sits in the cabinet.

Cast iron or stainless?

The three Whitehaven and Riverby sinks are enameled cast iron and carry Kohler’s enameled cast iron lifetime limited warranty; Kohler recommends its cast iron cleaner for them. The Vault is 18-gauge stainless with Kohler’s stainless sink lifetime limited warranty and comes with a bottom rack. Cast iron is much heavier, so plan support for the undermount installation and follow Kohler’s installation guide.

None of the four includes a drain. Our basket strainer guide covers strainers; the Whitehaven sinks have 3-5/8-inch drain holes, the Riverby 3-7/8 and the Vault 3-11/16.
