Best Mop Sinks and Floor Basins

For a standard 24 × 24-inch mop sink, the Zurn Z1996-24 composite basin or the Mustee 63M Durastone basin both connect to a 3-inch drain; for more room, the Zurn Z1996-36 is 24 × 36 inches with a mop shelf. Plan the floor drain before the basin goes in, and check your local code for the faucet’s backflow protection.

A mop sink, also called a mop service basin, sits on the floor with a low curb so you can set a bucket in it, pour out dirty water and rinse mops. Businesses use them in janitor closets; homeowners add them in garages, mudrooms and basements for cleaning and pet washing.

All three basins here connect to a 3-inch drain, so plan the drain line and trap before you pour or patch the floor.

Zurn Z1996-24: square composite basin

Planning the drain

A mop sink drains through the floor, so the drain and trap go under the slab or floor before the basin is set. All three basins here are made for a 3-inch connection: Zurn lists a 3-inch gasketed outlet with pipe reducer options, and Mustee lists a molded-in drain for 3-inch pipe with seals for 2-inch pipe or 3-inch soil pipe. Check which size and material your local code and drain line call for before ordering the seal or reducer.

In a slab, set the drain stub at the right height and location from the basin’s drawing so the gasket can seal. Our trap size by fixture guide covers how trap sizes are set, and our floor drain guide covers floor drain bodies.

The faucet and backflow protection

A mop sink faucet mounts on the wall above the basin, often on 8-inch centers, with a hose thread outlet and a pail hook. Because a hose can end up sitting in dirty water, service sink faucets are commonly sold with a built-in vacuum breaker. Backflow protection is a code matter, so ask your inspector what is required where you are and buy a faucet that meets it.

Run the hot and cold supplies to the wall at the faucet height, and add a hose and bracket and mop hanger if you will hang tools over the basin. Zurn and Mustee both sell these accessories for their basins.

Protecting the walls

Water and mop buckets splash. Stainless wall guards on the two or three walls around the basin protect drywall and make cleanup easy; Zurn lists a 20-gauge Type 304 stainless wall guard option, and Mustee sells accessories too. A bumper guard on the curb protects the basin edge from carts and buckets.

Seal the joint between the basin and the walls with a mildew-resistant sealant, and keep the floor around the basin sloped or protected so water does not run under it.

Mop sink vs utility sink

A mop sink sits on the floor, which makes it easy to dump a heavy bucket or wash a dog without lifting. A utility sink stands at counter height, which is better for washing tools, paint brushes and laundry by hand. If you mostly fill and dump buckets, choose a mop sink; if you mostly wash at the sink, choose a utility sink. See our utility sink guide for laundry tubs and cabinets.

Using a mop sink for pet washing

A floor basin with a 10-inch curb is easy for a dog to step into, which is why Mustee mentions pet washing as a home use. A 24 × 36-inch basin like the Zurn Z1996-36 gives a medium or large dog more room to stand and turn around.

Pet hair clogs drains quickly. Keep the strainer in place, and add a hair catcher over it during baths; our hair catcher guide covers options. A hose with a hand sprayer on the faucet makes rinsing easier, but the same backflow note applies: make sure the faucet has the protection your inspector requires. Use a non-slip mat in the basin so the dog does not slide on the bottom.

Installing a mop basin

Set the basin level and fully supported on a flat floor; follow the maker’s installation instructions for bedding and sealing. Connect the drain gasket to the stub, then test the drain with water before you finish the walls and trim. Our shop vac guide covers vacuums that help with cleanup during the job.
