For an 8-inch widespread faucet, the Kohler Cimarron K-2362-8 is a solid mid-size pick; for a small bath, the 21-inch Kohler Veer K-5265-1 takes a single-hole faucet; the 30-inch American Standard Town Square S gives the most deck space. Pedestal sinks anchor to the wall, so plan blocking and keep the drain and supplies inside the column’s width.

A pedestal sink is a wall-hung basin with a column under it. The column hides the drain and helps steady the sink, but the basin is anchored to the wall. That makes three things matter more than with a vanity: wall backing, where the drain and supplies come out of the wall, and the faucet hole pattern.
Kohler Cimarron K-2362-8: widespread faucet
Choose the Kohler Cimarron K-2362-8 for an 8-inch widespread faucet. Kohler’s spec sheet (resources.kohler.com) lists a 22-3/4-inch vitreous china basin with overflow and the K-2364 pedestal, three faucet holes 1-3/8 inches across on 8-inch centers, a 1-3/4-inch drain hole and a rim 34-1/2 inches above the finished floor. The bowl area is 21 × 12-3/4 inches with 3-5/8 inches of water depth.
The drawing shows 1/2-inch anchor holes in the sink and a mounting hole in the pedestal, and Kohler lists ASME A112.19.2/CSA B45.1 and IAPMO certification with a one-year limited warranty.

Kohler Veer K-5265-1: compact single-hole
Choose the Kohler Veer K-5265-1 for a small bath. Kohler lists (resources.kohler.com) a 21-inch vitreous china basin with overflow and the K-5246 pedestal, one 1-3/8-inch faucet hole, a 1-3/4-inch drain hole, side deck space and a rim 35-1/2 inches above the floor. The bowl area is 13-3/4 × 12-5/8 inches with 4 inches of water depth.
Its drawing calls for backer board of 2×6 lumber at least 36 inches long in the wall, and Kohler lists an optional hollow-wall hardware kit. Kohler also lists matching angle stops and a P-trap as recommended accessories.

American Standard Town Square S: a large fireclay top
Choose the American Standard Town Square S 0297400 for a wide sink with room for soap and toiletries. American Standard’s spec sheet (lixil.cdn.celum.cloud) lists a fine fireclay pedestal combination 30 × 22-1/2 × 35-3/16 inches, a 17-1/2 × 12-1/4-inch bowl 5-1/4 inches deep, rear overflow, a supplied mounting kit and a faucet ledge (faucet not included). The 0297400 has faucet holes on 4-inch centers; 8-inch and single-hole versions exist.
The sheet shows a 1-1/4-inch O.D. tailpiece and waste, and notes that supply and trap locations are suggested and that suitable reinforcement must be provided for all wall supports.

Wall backing is not optional
The basin is fastened to the wall through the anchor holes shown on the maker’s drawing, so the wall behind it has to hold those anchors. Kohler’s Veer drawing calls for a 2×6 backer at least 36 inches long, and American Standard says to provide suitable reinforcement for all wall supports. On a remodel, that usually means opening the drywall to add blocking between studs at the anchor height on the drawing.
If the wall is already finished and you cannot add blocking, check whether the maker sells a hollow-wall kit, as Kohler does for the Veer, and follow its instructions exactly.
Rough-in: drain and supplies behind the pedestal
A pedestal hides plumbing only if the plumbing is where the column can cover it. Spec sheets show suggested drain and supply locations; American Standard marks its trap and supply dimensions as suggested, and the Kohler drawings mark the drain and both supplies relative to the sink centerline.
Bring the trap arm out of the wall close to center and keep the supplies tight to it, then check the pedestal width on the drawing. A pedestal sink takes a 1-1/4-inch trap; our trap size guide covers the code table, and our P-trap guide covers kits, including chrome traps for a trap that shows beside the column.
Use compact angle stops and braided supply lines sized to the faucet; our supply stop guide and supply line guide help you pick them.
Faucet hole pattern decides the faucet
Order the sink and faucet together. A single-hole sink takes a single-hole faucet. A 4-inch centerset sink takes a centerset faucet or a single-hole faucet with a deck plate. An 8-inch widespread sink takes a widespread faucet. Kohler lists 1-3/8-inch faucet holes on both Kohler sinks here.
There is little room behind a pedestal column, so check that the faucet’s drain assembly and supply connections fit inside it. Before buying, compare the pedestal width on the drawing with your existing drain and supply locations; moving them a few inches is far easier with the wall open. Our pop-up drain guide covers drains.
Pedestal or wall-hung sink?
A pedestal sink and a wall-hung sink both hang on the wall. The pedestal covers the plumbing; a wall-hung sink leaves the floor open and the trap visible, which suits small rooms and accessible designs. Our wall-hung sink guide covers that option.
Neither gives the storage of a vanity, so plan a shelf or medicine cabinet if you need one.
Installing a pedestal sink: the order of work
- Set the blocking and rough in the drain and supplies to the drawing.
- Dry-fit the basin on the pedestal against the finished wall and mark the anchor holes.
- Mount the faucet and drain on the basin before hanging it; there is little room once it is on the wall.
- Anchor the basin, set the pedestal, then connect the trap and supplies.
- Fill the basin to the overflow, drain it and check every joint for leaks.
Follow the maker’s installation instructions for anchor type and torque, and do not overtighten into china.
Frequently asked questions
Do pedestal sinks need blocking in the wall?
Yes, plan on it. Kohler’s Veer drawing calls for a 2×6 backer at least 36 inches long, and American Standard says to provide suitable reinforcement for all wall supports.
What size drain does a pedestal sink use?
Kohler lists a 1-3/4-inch drain hole on both Kohler sinks here, and American Standard shows a 1-1/4-inch O.D. tailpiece; bathroom sinks take a 1-1/4-inch trap.
Does a pedestal sink come with the pedestal?
The models here are listed by their makers as basin-and-pedestal combinations. Some listings sell the top or leg alone, so check the part number.
What faucet fits a pedestal sink?
Match the hole pattern: single hole, 4-inch centerset or 8-inch widespread.
Can a pedestal sink hide the plumbing?
Only if the drain and supplies come out of the wall within the width of the column; check the maker’s rough-in drawing.
