Best Sink Grid

Buy the grid made for your exact sink model: the Kohler K-6639-ST for Whitehaven and Cairn sinks, the K-5133-ST for the Hartland’s left bowl, or the Ruvati RVA69733 for the RVH9733. If no matching grid exists, measure the flat bottom of the bowl, drain position and corner radius before buying a universal grid.

A sink grid, also called a bottom grid or sink rack, sits on the floor of the bowl to keep pots and dishes off the sink surface. It reduces scratches, lets water drain under the dishes, and works as a drying rack. The single most important rule: buy the grid made for your exact sink model. Bowl sizes, corner radii and drain positions differ, and a grid that almost fits rattles, slides or sits on the drain.

Kohler K-6639-ST: Whitehaven and Cairn racks

Choose the Kohler K-6639-ST if you have a 36-inch Kohler Whitehaven or a Cairn sink. Kohler lists (resources.kohler.com) left and right racks that fit the bowl of the K-6488 and K-6489 Whitehaven and the K-27785 Cairn sinks, electro-polished stainless steel, rubber feet for added protection, dishwasher-safe construction and a one-year limited warranty.

Kohler K-5133-ST: Hartland left bowl

Choose the Kohler K-5133-ST for the left bowl of a Kohler Hartland K-5818 double-bowl sink. Kohler lists (resources.kohler.com) stainless steel construction, wheels around the perimeter that Kohler says give a secure fit and reduce debris buildup, dishwasher-safe construction and a one-year limited warranty. Double-bowl sinks often need a different rack for each side, so check which bowl each rack fits.

Ruvati RVA69733: replacement rinse grid

Choose the Ruvati RVA69733 to replace the grid on a Ruvati RVH9733 sink. Ruvati lists (ruvati.com) a bottom rinse grid for the RVH9733BL, RVH9733CP and RVH9733GG, and says it is not compatible with any other sink or sink brand. Ruvati lists thick T-304 stainless bars that handle heavy pots, clear rubber feet and bumpers that keep metal off the sink, a raised design that lets water flow when the sink is full, and dishwasher-safe construction.

Find your sink model first

The model number is often on a label under the sink, on the sink’s underside near the drain, or in the paperwork from the install. Kohler, Ruvati, Kraus, Blanco and other makers sell grids by sink model. Search the maker’s accessories for that model number and buy the matching grid.

If the sink came with a grid that went missing, the original part number is often in the sink’s spec sheet under recommended accessories. Our kitchen sink guide covers the major sink brands.

Universal grids: measuring for one

If you cannot find a model-specific grid, a universal grid can work if you measure carefully. Measure the flat bottom of the bowl, not the top opening, from side to side and front to back. Note where the drain sits (center, rear or offset), the corner radius, and how much the sides slope. Third-party grids list these numbers, such as overall size, drain position and corner radius, so compare them to your sink.

A grid should sit flat on its feet, leave the drain opening clear, and not touch the sides. If it is slightly small, it will slide; if it is slightly large, it will rock or ride up the sloped walls.

Do you need a grid?

Stainless steel sinks show scratches and wear, so grids are popular in stainless sinks. Fireclay and enameled cast iron can chip or show metal marks from pots, and a grid with rubber feet helps there too. Granite composite is harder to scratch, but a grid still keeps heavy pots off the bowl. Our sink material comparison covers the differences.

The trade-off is cleaning: food collects under the grid. Lift it out and rinse it regularly, or run it through the dishwasher if the maker says it is dishwasher safe, as Kohler and Ruvati do for the grids here.

Rubber feet, bumpers and wheels

The parts that touch the sink matter as much as the grid itself. Kohler lists rubber feet on the Whitehaven racks and perimeter wheels on the Hartland rack; Ruvati lists clear rubber feet and side bumpers on its grid. These keep bare metal off the sink so the grid does not leave marks of its own.

Feet and bumpers wear out and fall off over time. Ruvati lists a replacement bumper and feet set on Amazon for its grids, and other makers offer similar parts. Replace missing feet promptly, since a grid sitting on bare metal corners can scratch the bowl it is meant to protect.

Single bowl or double bowl?

A single-bowl sink needs one grid sized to the whole bowl. A double-bowl sink usually needs a separate grid for each bowl, and the two bowls are often different sizes. Kohler’s K-5133 is made only for the left bowl of the Hartland, for example, and the Whitehaven K-6639 set includes a left and a right rack for one large bowl. Check that you are buying the right side, or both, before you order.

Cleaning under and around the grid

Lift the grid out at least weekly and rinse the sink floor underneath, where crumbs and grease collect. A soft brush clears the welds and corners. If the maker lists the grid as dishwasher safe, as Kohler and Ruvati do here, you can run it through the dishwasher. For the sink itself, use the cleaner the sink maker recommends; Kohler lists its K-23729 stainless steel cleaner as an accessory for these racks.

Grids and workstation sinks

Workstation sinks have ledges for cutting boards and colanders, and many include a bottom grid in the box. Before buying a separate grid, check what came with the sink. Our workstation sink guide covers sinks with accessories, and our farmhouse sink guide covers apron sinks that often use model-specific racks.

Keeping the drain clear

A grid should never cover the drain opening. If food scraps keep collecting under it, the basket strainer may be loose or worn; our basket strainer guide covers replacement strainers that seat properly.

Frequently asked questions

Does a sink grid fit any sink?

Usually not. Makers sell grids for specific sink models; Ruvati says its RVA69733 fits only the RVH9733 sinks.

What does a sink grid do?

It keeps pots and dishes off the bowl to reduce scratches, lets water drain underneath and works as a drying rack.

Are sink grids dishwasher safe?

Kohler and Ruvati list their grids here as dishwasher safe; check your grid’s instructions.

How do I find the right grid for my sink?

Find the sink model number, often on a label under the sink or in its paperwork, and buy the maker’s matching grid.

Can I use a universal sink grid?

Yes, if you measure the flat bottom of the bowl, the drain position and the corner radius and match them to the grid.
