A utility sink is a deep single bowl for a laundry room, garage or mudroom: rinsing paint brushes, soaking clothes, filling buckets. The two numbers that matter most are bowl depth and cabinet width. Kohler’s cast iron Glen Falls is the deepest here, and the Park Falls fits the narrowest cabinet.

Kohler Glen Falls K-19017-1: deepest bowl

Choose the Glen Falls K-19017-1 for the deepest bowl here in enameled cast iron. Kohler’s spec sheet (resources.kohler.com) lists a 25 × 22-inch sink with a single bowl 21-1/2 × 15-1/2 inches and 13 inches deep, one 1-3/8-inch faucet hole, a 3-7/8-inch drain hole, dual-mount installation (top or undermount) with the template included, and a 27-inch minimum cabinet. The undermount installation kit is not included.

The drawing places the faucet hole on the back ledge, centered over the drain, and the drain center 12-1/2 inches from the back edge. It shows the 1-1/2-inch drain outlet 19 inches below the rim, deeper than a typical kitchen sink, so check the height of the drain in your wall.

Kohler Park Falls K-19022-1: for a narrow cabinet

Choose the Park Falls K-19022-1 for a tight space. Kohler’s spec sheet (resources.kohler.com) lists a 21 × 22-inch enameled cast iron sink with a bowl 17-1/2 × 15-3/16 inches and 12-1/2 inches deep, one 1-3/8-inch faucet hole, a 3-7/8-inch drain hole and dual-mount installation. It fits a 21-inch cabinet as a top-mount sink, or a 24-inch cabinet as an undermount; the undermount kit is not included.

Like the Glen Falls, the drawing shows the drain outlet about 19 inches below the rim.

Kohler Undertone K-6661: stainless undermount, rear drain

Choose the Undertone K-6661 for a stainless undermount utility sink with the drain at the back. Kohler’s spec sheet (resources.kohler.com) lists premium 18-gauge stainless steel, a 23 × 17-1/2-inch undermount sink with a bowl 21-1/4 × 15-3/4 inches, rear drain placement that frees cabinet space underneath, included installation hardware, an included template and a 27-inch cabinet. It has no faucet holes, so the faucet mounts on the counter.

The features list an 11-1/4-inch depth while the technical table lists 11-5/16 inches; plan on about 11-1/4. The drawing calls for at least 2 inches of clearance around the rim for the sink clips.

Kohler Ballad K-5798-1: stainless drop-in

Kohler’s spec sheet (resources.kohler.com) lists premium 18-gauge stainless steel, a 25 × 22-inch top-mount sink with a bowl 21-1/4 × 15-3/4 inches, one 1-7/16-inch faucet hole, a 3-3/4-inch drain hole, included installation hardware and a 27-inch cabinet.

The features list an 11-5/8-inch depth while the technical table lists an 11-5/16-inch bowl depth; plan on about 11-5/16. The drawing shows the drain outlet 12-1/2 inches below the rim.

Cast iron or stainless for a utility sink?

The two cast iron sinks are deeper (12-1/2 and 13 inches) and carry Kohler’s enameled cast iron lifetime limited warranty; Kohler recommends its cast iron cleaner for them. The two stainless sinks are shallower at about 11-1/4 inches, use premium 18-gauge steel and carry Kohler’s stainless sink lifetime limited warranty. Cast iron is much heavier, so plan support for an undermount installation and follow Kohler’s installation instructions.

Which one for which room?

For a laundry room where you soak clothes or fill buckets, depth matters most, which points to the 13-inch Glen Falls or the 12-1/2-inch Park Falls. For a mudroom or garage counter where the sink is mostly used for quick rinsing, the stainless Undertone or Ballad give a large 21-1/4-inch-long bowl at a shallower depth. For a small closet or a gap between appliances, the Park Falls is the only one here that Kohler lists for a 21-inch cabinet.

If the counter is laminate, a top-mount sink is the usual choice; the Glen Falls, Park Falls and Ballad all mount on top of the counter. An undermount sink like the Undertone needs a solid counter such as stone or quartz and a cutout made from Kohler’s template.

Measure before you order

Measure the inside width of the base cabinet, the height of the drain stub-out in the wall, and where the hot and cold supplies come through. Then count the faucet holes you need: one on the Glen Falls, Park Falls and Ballad, none on the Undertone. Kohler includes a cutout template with the Glen Falls, Park Falls and Undertone; the Ballad sheet does not list a template but includes installation hardware.

Drain, faucet and cabinet

Kohler lists its K-8799 strainer basket or K-8801 drain with tailpiece as recommended accessories for all four sinks; none includes a drain. The cast iron sinks have 3-7/8-inch drain holes and the Ballad a 3-3/4-inch hole. The deep cast iron bowls put the drain outlet about 19 inches below the rim, so a laundry-room drain set high in the wall may need to be lowered.
