Choose the Symmons 482SH7 for seven modes and a thumb-lever selector, or the 582SH for a single Total spray with Braston styling. Both checked polished-chrome base models are rated at 2.0 GPM. Confirm the full model code, arm connection and available space before buying.

Compare seven modes with one Total spray
| Model | Selection reason | Drawn diameter / depth | Connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| 482SH7 | Seven modes, including Pause | 3-15/16 / 3-1/16 | 1/2-inch–14 NPT |
| 582SH | Single Total spray; Braston styling | 4-1/16 / 3-1/2 | 1/2-inch–14 NPT |
Symmons describes both as nominal 4-inch round heads. Their 482SH7 drawing (images.salsify.com) and 582SH drawing (images.salsify.com) give the more precise dimensions above. Depth here is the body dimension between the reference lines shown in each drawing. It is not a complete installed projection, an extra allowance for protruding nozzles or the head’s height on an angled arm.
The useful first decision is how you want to use the head. Pick a selector with several patterns if you will actually change them. Pick the single-function model if the documented Total spray is what you want. Neither choice requires assuming that more settings or a slightly wider face produces better pressure.
482SH7: choose it for a thumb-lever selector
Choose the Symmons 482SH7 if you want different spray patterns from one fixed head. Its current product page (symmons.com) identifies an easy-shift thumb lever, rubber nozzles and a solid-brass ball joint. The specification sheet (images.salsify.com) lists seven modes: Full, Massage, Dual, Center, Waterfall, Spa and Non-Positive Shutoff, also called Pause.
Pause reduces the stream to a trickle. It is one of the seven listed modes, so the count does not mean seven full-flow spray patterns plus an extra stop button. Select this model for that range of controls, without treating the feature names as proof of a therapeutic benefit.
The base polished-chrome 482SH7 is listed at 2.0 GPM. The drawing shows a 3-15/16-inch diameter and 3-1/16-inch depth, with a 1/2-inch–14 NPT connection. The maker identifies this head with the Dia collection. That collection link is a style reference, not a guarantee that every older Dia installation has the same connection or clearance.
Skip it if you only want one spray, if you need a handheld hose, or if you need a complete valve-and-trim system. Also check whether the thumb lever is easy to reach from where the head will sit. The maker’s brass ball-joint statement should not be read as a specification that the entire head body is solid brass.
The standard new offer checked on October 15, 2026 was sold by Amazon.com, showed stock and had an add-to-cart button. Its model and manufacturer part number both matched 482SH7, with Polished Chrome selected.

582SH: choose it for a single spray and Braston style
Choose the Symmons 582SH if you prefer a single-function head and want the appearance that the maker coordinates with Braston. Its current model page (symmons.com) calls the pattern Total and identifies rubber EverFlow nozzles. The model sheet (images.salsify.com) specifies one mode and a standard 2.0 GPM flow rate.
The 582SH drawing labels a 4-1/16-inch diameter, a 3-1/2-inch depth and a 1/2-inch–14 NPT connection. Its nominal size is still 4 inches. The face is only 1/8 inch wider than the 482SH7’s drawn diameter; that small difference does not turn it into a large rain head.
The longer drawn body also deserves a clearance check. Compare the drawing with the available space at your shower arm, especially if the arm sits near a ceiling, a wall return or another fixture. A similar finish and brand name do not establish that the new head will occupy the same space as the old one.
Skip it if you want the seven-mode selector or the documented Pause mode of the 482SH7. Do not assume the similar-looking 582SH7 and the single-function 582SH are interchangeable names. The final 7 identifies a different model, and the exact box and listing should match what you chose.
The standard new polished-chrome offer checked on October 15, 2026 was sold by Amazon.com, showed stock and had an add-to-cart button. The model and manufacturer part number both matched 582SH.

Use Pause as described, not as the shower shutoff
On the 482SH7, Symmons explicitly describes Pause as reducing flow to a trickle. The specification sheet calls it Non-Positive Shutoff, abbreviated NPSO. That wording is the key to setting expectations: the head still passes some water in this mode.
Use the shower’s normal valve to turn the shower off when finished. Do not buy this head to isolate a leak or replace a faulty control valve. The selector changes what happens at the head; it does not make this purchase a replacement for the controls in the wall.
Think about which patterns you need before choosing. A person who wants one repeatable spray may have little use for a selector. Someone who likes switching between a broader pattern and a more concentrated one has a clear reason to consider the 482SH7. We have not tested either pattern for rinsing speed, spray force or comfort.
Massage and Spa are the maker’s pattern names. This comparison does not claim pain relief, faster recovery or any health effect. If the real requirement is a movable spray for rinsing the enclosure, compare our handheld shower head guide before choosing either fixed model.
Match the full flow and finish code
Both recommendations here are base models in polished chrome at the maker’s listed 2.0 GPM flow rate. Both linked sheets also list a 15 option for a 1.5 GPM version. Treat that as a separate factory variant to identify and verify, rather than assuming that every listing on the family page has the same rating. This is a buying-code distinction, not an instruction to alter the flow-control parts.
The sheets list finish options including STN for Satin Nickel, MB for Matte Black and BBZ for Brushed Bronze. A change of finish or flow can change the full model code and the Amazon product reached by the selector. Check the final listing fields again after changing an option.
The 482SH7 and 582SH7 codes are especially easy to confuse because both are seven-mode heads with a nominal 4-inch size. This guide’s multi-mode offer is specifically 482SH7. Its single-mode offer is specifically 582SH. The model and manufacturer part-number fields, selected color and linked ASIN were checked together. Match those complete codes rather than relying on the words Contemporary, Classic or HydroMersion in a marketplace title.
A 2.0 GPM rating is a product specification, not our measured output in your bathroom. We have not verified that either model will correct a low-flow problem. If that is the reason for the purchase, start with the checks in our shower low-pressure guide and confirm the installed system’s requirements.
Check the connection before replacing an older head
The primary drawing for each recommended model labels its connection as 1/2-inch–14 NPT. Compare that designation with the actual arm and the installation information for the existing shower. Do not assume a head can be swapped solely because the old controls also say Symmons.
Keep the head, shower arm, wall trim and control valve separate in your shopping list. These recommendations identify the heads themselves. They do not specify a new concealed valve, a handle kit or a complete remodel package. An old assembly may need a different part than the one shown in a current shower-system photo.
Use the current delivered instructions for assembly and compatibility. The submittal drawings establish the dimensions and connection; they do not give a complete removal procedure for every older fitting. If you cannot identify the existing connection without forcing it, confirm the model with the maker before ordering a replacement.
Also check space to aim the head and reach any selector. The nominal face size does not describe the whole installation envelope. Keep the drawing’s connection-end reference point in mind when comparing its depth with the old head, and avoid assuming a swivel angle that the source does not specify.
Clean the finish with the maker’s care method
The Symmons care FAQ (symmons.com) recommends mild soap and water on a soft cloth, then drying with a cloth or microfiber towel. It warns against abrasive scrubbing sponges, all-purpose cleaners and harsh bathroom chemicals on the finish.
The same FAQ says that home cleaning mixtures such as vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda can damage or discolor finishes. Do not import a vinegar-soak recipe from another shower-head brand and assume it is the right treatment for this one. Use the model’s supplied maintenance instructions if a particular deposit needs more attention.
Symmons describes the EverFlow rubber nozzles on these current product pages as easy to clean. That is a documented feature description, not evidence that the head never accumulates deposits or never needs care. We have not measured cleaning time or resistance to mineral buildup.
Keep the full model code and finish with the care information. That helps distinguish a later replacement head from the older valve or trim in the same bathroom. Before ordering, return to the exact offer and confirm its model, selected finish, new condition and stock, since those buying details can change.
Frequently asked questions
Which Symmons pick has seven modes?
The 482SH7 has Full, Massage, Dual, Center, Waterfall, Spa and Pause. The 582SH is a separate single-function model with the Total spray described on its product page.
Does Pause completely stop the water?
No. Symmons describes the 482SH7 Pause mode as reducing flow to a trickle. Use the shower valve to turn the shower off when finished.
Are both heads exactly four inches wide?
Four inches is their nominal size. The 482SH7 drawing labels a 3-15/16-inch diameter, while the 582SH drawing labels 4-1/16 inches.
Does the brass ball joint mean the whole 482SH7 is brass?
The maker identifies a brass ball joint. That component description does not establish that the entire head body is solid brass.
Can I use a vinegar soak on the finish?
Symmons recommends mild soap and water and warns that home mixtures such as vinegar can damage or discolor finishes. Follow the model’s supplied care instructions.
How we chose
We read the exact current Symmons 482SH7 and 582SH pages, downloaded their linked model submittals and visually inspected both dimension drawings. We used the current maker support FAQ for finish care. We checked standard new Amazon offers on October 15, 2026 for model and manufacturer part-number matches, Polished Chrome selection, seller, stock and add-to-cart availability. Both accepted offers were sold by Amazon.com. The picks distinguish selector behavior and fit; they are not a tested performance ranking. Read our selection method and about Plumbing Picks.
