Quick answer: Match the Symmons part to the symptom.
- Drips from the spout or showerhead when off: TA-9 washer kit first, then the TA-4 seats.
- Only hot, only cold, or no water: the piston in the TA-10 spindle may be jammed. Clean it first; replace the TA-10 if it still will not move.
- Too hard or too easy to turn: the T-16 seal kit and T-17 packing nut.
- Older valve: Symmons says the TA-10 design has not changed since 1968, and the TA-4 seats fit any Temptrol valve back to 1968.
From Symmons’ repair parts pages, spindle maintenance answers and Temptrol submittals, read October 10, 2026. We have not repaired a Temptrol for this page. The one buy link is the genuine Symmons TA-9 kit; its Amazon offer was checked on October 10, 2026 as new, sold by Amazon.com and in stock. Offers change, so check that the listing says TA-9.
Is it a Temptrol?
These parts are for Symmons Temptrol pressure-balancing valves, so confirm the valve before ordering rather than judging by the handle or trim. Symmons’ submittals identify Temptrol bodies by model number:
- S-46-1-BODY: Temptrol shower mixing valve with integral volume control.
- S-46-2-BODY: Temptrol tub-shower mixing valve with integral diverter.
- An X in the model (S-46-1X-BODY, S-46-2X-BODY): the version with integral service stops for shutting off water at the valve.
- A -REV modification: reverse coring, hot on the right and cold on the left, for back-to-back installations.
Paperwork for the trim can help too. Symmons’ spec sheet for its Dia 3532-B-TRM tub/shower trim says it requires a Temptrol pressure balancing tub/shower valve, and lists a -REB rebuild trim kit option that includes the TA-10 and TA-4. Treat a trim model as a pointer to check, not proof of what is behind the wall.
The same submittals describe the Temptrol as a 4-port pressure-balancing valve with an adjustable stop screw that limits handle turn. If you cannot find a model number on the valve, its packaging or paperwork, Symmons lists (800) 796-6667 and gethelp (at) symmons.com on the submittals.
Which part fixes which symptom
On a phone this table scrolls sideways; the symptom stays in view. Swipe the table, or tab to it and use the left and right arrow keys.
| Symptom | Symmons part | What it contains |
|---|---|---|
| Drips from the tub spout or showerhead when off | TA-9 washer repair kit first; then TA-4 seats if it still drips | TA-9: hot and cold washers, cold washer retainer ring, hot washer screw, and a T-11 cap gasket. TA-4: hot and cold seats |
| Only hot, only cold, or no water | TA-10 spindle, if cleaning does not free it | The whole spindle with its pressure-balancing piston |
| Seal around the spindle worn, or the valve too hard or too easy to turn | T-16 washer repair kit (tension is set with the T-17 packing nut) | Packing washer, O-ring and brass washers inside the T-12A cap assembly |
| Trim will not reach a valve set too deep | TA-10-EXT-KIT | Spindle extension, longer handle and escutcheon screws, diverter/volume control extension |
Checked buy link: Symmons TA-9 Temptrol washer repair kit on Amazon. It has the washer parts and T-11 gasket listed in the table, not the TA-4 seats or the TA-10 spindle, so if the valve still drips after new washers, check the seats next.
If the seats are damaged or worn, Symmons says to replace both at the same time. They come out with the T35C universal seat removal tool, which Symmons says fits current and legacy Temptrol valves.
Skip the TA-9 kit if:
- The valve is not a Temptrol. Confirm the model first (see above); other brands use their own parts.
- You get only hot, only cold, or no water. That points to the TA-10 piston; try cleaning it first.
- The washers are already new and it still drips, or the seats are damaged or worn. Replace both TA-4 seats.
- The valve takes too much or too little force to turn, or the seal around the spindle is worn. That is the T-16 kit and T-17 packing nut.
- The trim will not reach the valve. That is the TA-10-EXT-KIT.
Try this before buying a spindle
When a Temptrol gives all hot or all cold water, Symmons says the piston inside the TA-10 has jammed with debris such as minerals, dirt or bits of solder. Its steps:
- Open the valve halfway, remove the handle, and tap the end of the spindle firmly with a plastic or wooden hammer.
- If that fails, shut the water off, remove the spindle, and tap its handle end against something solid. Shake it: a free piston makes a distinct click.
- If minerals are the problem, soak the piston assembly in white vinegar, and flush or clean the valve body if you can.
- If the piston still does not move freely, or the spindle is damaged, replace it with a new TA-10.
Taking the valve apart
Symmons’ steps begin with two warnings: turn off the water to the valve, and open the valve about half a turn before removing the handle, because removing the cap with the valve closed damages the cap and spindle. Then remove the plug button, handle screw and handle, the two escutcheon screws, the dial and escutcheon, and the dome cover. Unscrew the cap assembly with a wrench; the spindle comes out with it. When reassembling, draw the spindle close to the cap before threading the cap back in, again to avoid damage. Symmons gives 15 foot-pounds for tightening new seats.
Symmons says all Temptrol valves designed for Bath Fitter have integral service stops, as do the X models above, for shutting off the water at the valve (T-52 is the stop kit). If yours has no stops at the valve, shut off the water elsewhere; see how to shut off your water main.
Spindle versions and other kits
- TA-10: the Temptrol flow control spindle, for Temptrol shower series valves.
- TA-10-3HL: listed as a limited (low) flow spindle for the Temptrol shower series. Symmons names it as the recommended replacement for the retired TA-10-NO/CH non-chatter spindle.
- T-108 / T-109 reverse seat: for a valve whose hot and cold supplies are piped backward; the reverse seat replaces the cold seat and needs the pentagon tool in the T-108 kit.
- T-11 cap gasket: Symmons recommends replacing it whenever the valve is taken apart; one comes in the TA-9 kit.
If your shower is a different brand, the parts are different; see shower valve cartridge replacement.
