MasterClean and Katalyst
MasterClean is Kohler’s easy-to-clean sprayface, which Kohler says withstands mineral buildup and keeps the spray working. Katalyst air-induction, listed on the rainhead, mixes air into the water to make bigger drops, according to Kohler. Kohler lists these features on many of its shower products, so compare models mainly on type, size and flow rate.
Flow rates and water limits
Federal rules cap new shower heads at 2.5 gpm, and some states and cities set lower limits. Kohler sells many heads in both versions; the G suffix on the Forté K-22169-G marks the 1.75 gpm WaterSense model. If you live where lower limits apply, choose the lower-flow version. Rain heads need the right arm
A rainhead works best overhead. Kohler lists an optional K-7394 6-inch ceiling-mount arm for the K-13692; on a standard angled wall arm, a large rainhead points forward rather than straight down. Kohler identifies finishes by a code after the model number. The Forté K-22169 spec sheet lists Polished Chrome (CP), Vibrant Polished Nickel (SN), Vibrant French Gold (AF), Vibrant Brushed Nickel (BN) and Vibrant Brushed Bronze (BV); the K-13692 rainhead adds Oil-Rubbed Bronze (2BZ) and Vibrant Brushed Moderne Brass (2MB). Cleaning and hard water
Even with MasterClean sprayfaces, hard water leaves scale. Shower arm and flange
Kohler lists the shower arm and flange as sold separately for these heads. If your existing arm is sound and the right length, you can reuse it. If you are changing position, adding a rainhead, or the old arm is corroded, buy a new arm and flange in the same finish. Kohler lists matching arms such as the K-7395 and K-7397 on its spec sheets, and the K-7394 ceiling arm for the rainhead.
Installing a Kohler shower head
All three connect to a standard 1/2-inch threaded shower arm. Unscrew the old head, clean the threads, wrap them clockwise with thread seal tape, and thread the new head on by hand.
