Your water heater is the right size, the elements are fine, nothing leaks — and you still run out of hot water halfway through a shower. If the tank also spits small white or grey flecks from the taps, the part that failed costs about as much as a pizza.

What a dip tube does
Cold water enters at the top of the tank — but it must be delivered to the bottom, or it would mix straight into the hot water you’re about to draw. The dip tube is the long plastic pipe that carries incoming cold from the inlet down to the base of the tank, keeping the hot layer intact above it.
That’s the whole design: hot rises, cold gets injected underneath, and you draw from the top. It works until the tube breaks.
The two failures, and what each looks like
It cracks or breaks off short
Now cold water dumps into the middle or top of the tank and mixes directly with the hot. The tank is still full and the elements still work — but what comes out of the tap is lukewarm and stays that way.
The symptom: dramatically less usable hot water with no other fault. A shower that used to be fine now goes cool in a few minutes, and the heater recovers normally afterward. People replace a perfectly good water heater over this.
It disintegrates
The plastic degrades and sheds. Small white, grey or blue plastic flecks appear in aerators, shower heads, washing machine screens and dishwasher filters. You’ll clean a faucet aerator, get a week of relief, and find it clogged again — because the source is still upstream, shedding.

Don’t confuse it with the other causes
- A dead lower element also gives you a short burst of hot water then cold — test the elements before blaming the tube. See element replacement and thermostat vs element.
- Heavy sediment reduces capacity by taking up volume, and makes rumbling noises — water heater making noise.
- An undersized heater was never going to keep up; that’s a sizing problem, not a fault.
- Flecks that are hard and mineral-like rather than plastic are scale, not dip tube.
Working it from the symptom: no hot water troubleshooting.
The competing cause nobody checks: a cross-connection
This is the one that wastes the most money, because the symptom is identical — lukewarm water, plenty of it, heater working fine — and the dip tube is innocent.
A cross-connection is cold water leaking into the hot side somewhere in the house. The usual culprits are a single-handle faucet or shower valve whose cartridge has failed internally and is now letting cold bleed across to hot, a tub/shower diverter that no longer seals, or a failed thermostatic mixing valve. Cold water is under the same pressure as hot, so it pushes back through and dilutes the entire hot side of the system. Every hot tap in the house goes lukewarm at once.
The test takes two minutes and settles it:
- Close the cold inlet valve on top of the water heater. The tank is now isolated on the supply side.
- Open a hot tap somewhere in the house and let it run.
- It should deliver whatever is in the tank and then trail off to nothing as the tank empties of pressure.
- If water keeps running steadily and indefinitely from that hot tap, cold is getting into the hot side somewhere. You have a cross-connection, not a dip tube.
To find it, shut the individual fixture stops one at a time and repeat. When the hot tap finally goes dead, the last fixture you isolated is the one with the failed cartridge or diverter.
Two related possibilities worth ruling out in the same visit: a tempering or mixing valve on the hot outlet that has drifted or failed — the code calls for one where a system heats above 140°F, so plenty of houses have one and the owner has never seen it — and a recirculation line whose crossover valve has failed, which does the same thing continuously.
A distinction worth making before you order the part
On most modern heaters the cold inlet does not just hold a dip tube. It holds a heat-trap nipple, and the dip tube hangs from or sits beneath it. That matters in three ways:
- Heat-trap nipples are directional. They contain a small plastic ball or flap that stops convection carrying heat up the pipes, and they are marked for the inlet and the outlet. Fitted the wrong way round, or swapped between ports, they restrict flow — and you will chase that as a pressure problem for weeks.
- That plastic ball is also a thing that degrades and sheds, which means “plastic in the aerators” does not automatically mean the dip tube. Pull the nipple and look at it before you assume.
- It is one more thing to get out. If the nipple is seized, the dip tube is not coming out either.
What to buy
- Reliance 9006178-005 52-inch dip tube — a common replacement length for full-size residential tanks.
Measure before ordering. Tube length follows tank height, and it should reach near the bottom without touching. Too short and you’ve recreated the fault; too long and it can rest on sediment. Trimming a slightly long tube is normal practice — check your heater’s spec.
Two shopping details that catch people. Tubes come in different outside diameters and head shapes — some are a plain push-fit, some have a keyed collar or a flange that locates in the nipple — so match the head to the one you pull out, not just the length. And some replacements are curved or fluted at the outlet, designed to swirl incoming cold across the tank floor and keep sediment moving toward the drain valve. On a tank that is already sedimented, that is a reasonable upgrade rather than a gimmick.
Replacing it
- Power or gas off, cold supply off, and drain enough water to get below the inlet.
- Disconnect the cold inlet at the top of the tank.
- Remove the inlet nipple — the dip tube hangs from it or sits directly beneath it. Old ones often come out in pieces; get every fragment you can.
- Fit the new tube, seal the nipple threads properly (thread tape or pipe dope), and reassemble.
- Refill completely, purge the air at a hot tap, then restore power. ⚠️ On an electric heater, energizing before the tank is full destroys the elements.
- Clean the aerators and screens afterward — fragments are already downstream and will keep turning up for a while.
Where this job goes wrong, and when to stop
Step three is the whole job. Everything else is easy.
- The nipple is seized. Years of hot water and dissimilar metals do that. You need a long breaker bar and a proper six-point socket, and you need to counter-hold the tank so you are twisting the nipple and not the tank’s steel connection. Heat is not really an option on a glass-lined tank with plastic parts inside it.
- 🔴 The honest stopping point. If the nipple will not move and the tank body starts to flex or the connection creaks, stop. Cracking the glass lining or distorting the tank connection turns a cheap part into a full replacement, and you will not know you have done it until it leaks. This is a legitimate call-a-plumber moment.
- Clearance above the tank. The tube is as long as the tank is tall, so you need most of that height above it to lift it out. In a closet with a low ceiling you may have to disconnect and walk the heater out first — which changes the economics of the whole job. The code requires heaters to be located and connected so as to provide access for observation, maintenance, servicing and replacement; if yours is not, this is where you find out.
- Fragments in the bottom of the tank. Flush hard while it is drained and expect to find more later. A shop vac on the drain valve can pull surprising amounts out.
- Draining is slow or stops. The drain valve is required to be at least 3/4 inch with a garden hose outlet, but the cheap plastic ones block on the sediment you are trying to remove. If it plugs, poke it clear from outside with a stiff wire rather than opening the tank up.
Is it worth doing?
On a heater under roughly eight years old, absolutely — it’s a cheap part restoring full capacity. On an older tank, you’re doing most of a replacement’s labor on something near end of life, and the honest math is in repair cost versus replacement cost. While the tank is drained, it’s also the natural moment to flush sediment and check the anode.
The argument against, put plainly: if the tank is older, the anode is spent, the drain valve is plugged with sediment and the nipple is seized, you are spending an afternoon and risking the glass lining to extend a tank that owes you nothing. Replacing the tube is the right call when the heater is otherwise sound. It is a poor call as a way of avoiding a replacement you already know is coming.
FAQ
What are the white flecks coming out of my faucets?
Usually a disintegrating dip tube shedding plastic into the tank, which then travels to aerators, shower heads and appliance screens. Hard mineral-like particles are scale instead.
Can a broken dip tube cause no hot water?
Not usually a total loss of hot water — it causes a big drop in usable hot water. Cold enters partway up the tank and mixes with the hot, so the tap runs lukewarm even though the heater is working.
How do I know it’s the dip tube and not the element?
Test the elements for continuity first — a dead lower element gives a similar short-burst symptom. Plastic flecks in aerators point strongly at the dip tube; no debris and a failed continuity test points at the element.
How do I rule out a cross-connection?

Can I just cut a length of plastic pipe to replace it?
No. The tube has to be the right material for continuous hot potable water, the right outside diameter and head shape to locate in the nipple, and the right length to reach near the bottom without resting on sediment. Match the part you pull out.
