This is the question I get from every plumber and serious DIYer who has just bought a press tool: does the brand of fitting actually matter, or is a press fitting a press fitting? The short answer is that below 2 inches they are functionally interchangeable, and above it they are not — and almost everything that goes wrong comes from not knowing where that line sits.
I pull and replace copper for a living. Here is the honest comparison, what the standard actually says, and the two places where picking the wrong brand costs you real money.
The short answer
At 2-1/2 inches and up, they stop being interchangeable. NIBCO’s large-diameter fittings press with NIBCO-approved jaws. Commit to one brand for the big stuff and match your jaws to it.
Availability is the real tiebreaker, not performance. Viega ProPress is genuinely stocked everywhere including Amazon; NIBCO is a supply-house line with only a thin Amazon presence.
Why they are interchangeable at all — the part nobody explains
Press fittings are not a proprietary invention per brand. They are governed by ASME B16.51, Copper and Copper Alloy Press-Connect Pressure Fittings, which in its own words “establishes requirements for cast copper alloy, wrought copper, and wrought copper alloy, press-connect pressure fittings for use with hard drawn seamless copper water tube conforming to ASTM B88.” The standard sets the pressure-temperature rating at 200 psi from 32°F to 200°F.
That is the whole reason cross-brand pressing works. Both companies are building to the same dimensional envelope on the same tube. The jaw does not know or care whose logo is on the fitting — it knows the outside diameter and the profile. Below 2 inches, those are standardized.
Above 2 inches, the standard leaves more room, the tooling gets heavier, and manufacturers qualify their own jaw-and-ring combinations. That is where the interchangeability quietly ends.

Viega ProPress — the default, and the one you can actually buy online
ProPress is the original and it is the safe answer. Viega’s own spec is that a connection is made in four to seven seconds, and that it can be pressed on a wet line — which matters more than it sounds. Being able to press a joint that is still weeping is the single biggest reason press beat soldering for repair work. You cannot sweat a wet joint. You can press one.
Pricing is real and worth knowing before you commit: a 10-pack of Viega 78047 ProPress 1/2″ zero-lead couplings with stop costs several times what the equivalent sweat fittings do (checked August 1, 2026). A 1/2″ sweat coupling is well under a dollar. That gap is the trade you are making — you pay several times more per fitting to buy back labor time and lose the torch.

NIBCO Press — the supply-house alternative, strongest where it is biggest
NIBCO Press is a genuinely equivalent system below 2 inches and a good one. Where it earns its place is the large-diameter end and the transition fittings, and where it frustrates people is availability: NIBCO is a wholesale line first. Amazon carries scattered pieces — the 3/4″ press × 3/4″ PEX copper adapter is a typical example, and it is a genuinely useful part if you are transitioning a copper stub to PEX. But you will not build a job out of Amazon’s NIBCO selection.
Buy the NIBCO range from Ferguson, SupplyHouse, or your local wholesaler. I would rather tell you that than point you at a lookalike listing.

Where brand choice actually costs you money
Two places, and neither is the one people worry about.
- Jaws above 2 inches. This is the expensive mistake. If you standardize on NIBCO for large-diameter work you are buying into NIBCO-approved jaws, and jaws are not cheap. Decide before you buy the tooling, not after. Below 2 inches, mix freely and shop on price.
- Over-ordering. The fitting is the expensive part of a press joint. On a repipe, a box of the wrong-size elbows is real money sitting on the van. Count the job, then add a sensible margin — do not buy assortments to feel prepared.
What actually fails on a pressed joint
Neither brand fails often. When a pressed joint leaks, in my experience it is almost never the fitting:
- The unpressed joint. The most common press failure on a job is a joint somebody forgot to press. It holds under no pressure and looks finished. Both systems now use a design that leaks visibly on an unpressed joint during test, which is exactly what you want — mark each joint as you press it.
- A damaged O-ring. A burr or a sharp edge on the tube end will nick the seal on insertion. This is why a clean, square, deburred cut matters more with press than with solder. A sweat joint forgives a rough cut; a pressed one does not.
- Out-of-round tube. Copper that has been stepped on or crushed in transit will not seal. Cut past it.
- Insufficient insertion depth. Mark your insertion depth on the tube. If the tube is not fully home, the press deforms the wrong part of the fitting.
Notice that three of those four are tube preparation, not fitting brand. That is the honest summary of this whole comparison: your cut quality matters more than your brand choice.
So which should you buy?
- Residential and light commercial, 1/2″ to 2″: buy whichever is cheaper and in stock. Our full copper press fitting guide covers the rest of the brands, including Apollo Xpress. - Large-diameter commercial work: pick one brand and match your jaws to it. Do not mix at 2-1/2″ and up.

Frequently asked questions
Can you mix NIBCO and Viega press fittings on the same job?
Yes, below 2 inches. Both are manufactured to ASME B16.51 for ASTM B88 copper tube and press with standard RIDGID and Milwaukee jaws, so mixing brands on a residential job is fine. At 2-1/2 inches and above, stop mixing — NIBCO’s large-diameter fittings press with NIBCO-approved jaws.
Is NIBCO Press as good as Viega ProPress?
Below 2 inches, yes — they are built to the same standard with the same pressure-temperature rating, and I would not hesitate to use either. The real difference is availability rather than performance: Viega is stocked everywhere including online, while NIBCO is primarily a plumbing-wholesale line.
What pressure are copper press fittings rated for?
ASME B16.51 rates copper press-connect fittings for 200 psi across a temperature range of 32°F to 200°F. That covers residential and most light-commercial potable water work comfortably.
Why do press fittings cost so much more than sweat fittings?
A 1/2 inch ProPress coupling costs several times what a sweat coupling does. You are paying for the O-ring, the precision of the fitting body, and the labor time you buy back — a press joint takes four to seven seconds against several minutes to clean, flux, heat and solder. On a high-joint-count job the labor saving wins; on a single repair, soldering is often still cheaper.
Can you press a copper joint that still has water in it?
Yes, and it is one of the strongest arguments for the system. Viega lists wet-line pressing as a design feature. You cannot solder a joint that is weeping, which is exactly the situation most repair calls put you in.
