You want a bathroom in the basement. The drain line leaves your house above the basement floor, so nothing down there can drain by gravity. That is the whole problem, and there are exactly two answers to it.
Quick answer: the real question is not which pump is better — it is whether you are willing to break the concrete floor. A sewage ejector means jackhammering the slab, burying a basin, and tying into the house drain underneath; it then behaves like a completely normal bathroom forever. An upflush (macerating) system sits on top of the finished floor behind the toilet, grinds waste, and pumps it up a small pipe to the drain — no concrete, but it is visible, it is audible on every flush, and it is fussy about what you put in it. Open floor or a bathroom you will keep for a decade, use an ejector. Finished basement, garage conversion, under a stairwell, or a rental, use an upflush.

The two systems, and why they are not really alternatives
A sewage ejector is a pump sitting in a sealed basin buried below the floor. Your new toilet, sink and shower drain into it by gravity, exactly as they would upstairs. When the basin fills, the pump lifts everything up to the house drain. Because the discharge is a full 2-inch line, solids go through whole — nothing is chopped.
An upflush or macerating system is the opposite arrangement. The unit sits on the finished floor, usually in a box directly behind the toilet, and the toilet discharges into it horizontally. A stainless blade grinds the waste into a slurry, which is then pushed up a pipe closer to garden-hose diameter than drain pipe.
They are not two versions of the same thing. One is a drainage system installed below the floor; the other is an appliance installed on top of it. Everything below follows from that.

Start with the two numbers that disqualify one option
Before any of the comfort arguments matter, check whether an upflush can physically reach your drain. Every macerator publishes a lift and a run, and they are hard limits, not guidance.
- The Saniflo Saniplus lists 15 feet vertically or 150 feet horizontally.
- The Saniflo Sanicompact lists 9 feet below the sewer line, or 120 feet from a soil stack.
Measure from the unit up to where you can tie into an existing drain. If your connection point is higher than that, or further along, the upflush is out and the conversation is over — you are installing an ejector. (Note that vertical and horizontal trade against each other; a long horizontal run eats into the lift you have available, so leave margin rather than designing to the published maximum.)
For comparison, the ejector side is not really constrained here: the Zoeller M267 lists 125 GPM maximum flow and a 22-foot maximum head — two separate limits, not one operating point. Lift is rarely what decides an ejector job. Concrete is.
What each one will actually accept
This is where I see the most regret, and it is worth being blunt about.
An ejector takes what a normal toilet takes, because nothing has to be reduced in size — a 2-inch discharge passes solids whole. That does not make it a garbage disposal, and “flushable” wipes will still eventually build a rag ball in the basin. But the failure is slower and more forgiving.
A macerator has to chop everything before it can move it. Wipes, tampons, dental floss, cotton buds and paper towel wrap around the blade and stall it. In a family bathroom used by guests who do not know there is a macerator behind the wall, that is a service call waiting to happen. In a primary suite, a shop bathroom, or a rental where you can put a sign up, it is fine for years.
Both units grind or pump on hardened stainless steel — the Saniplus and Sanicompact both list hardened stainless blades — and neither is the weak point. The weak point is what gets flushed.

Saniflo is the brand that has been doing this in the US for decades, and the two models below cover almost every real situation. Picking the wrong one of these two is the single most common mistake, so read the difference carefully — and note that the more expensive one does less.

The distinction that catches people: the Saniplus is a pump only — you buy a standard rear-outlet toilet separately and it discharges into the box. The Sanicompact is the toilet, with the macerator built into its base. So the Sanicompact costs more while covering less (a half bath, plus a sink), because you are also buying the fixture. If you want a shower or tub in that basement bathroom, the Sanicompact cannot do it at any price and you need the Saniplus.
The ejector setups worth buying
If you are opening the floor anyway, buy the basin and pump as a package. Assembling a pit from parts is how you end up with a basin that is not sealed properly, and a sewage basin that is not sealed is a sewer gas problem inside your house.

Two details on that Liberty package are worth understanding rather than skimming. The anti-flotation collar stops the basin lifting out of the ground when the soil around it saturates — an empty sealed drum in wet ground genuinely wants to float, and a basin that has risen has broken its own drain connection. The part nobody mentions: both of these must be vented
A sewage basin has to be vented to the outside, not just capped. It is a sealed vessel that fills with waste and displaces air, and that air has to leave somewhere other than through a trap in your new bathroom. Macerators need a vent connection too.
This is the item that fails inspection most often on a basement bathroom, and it is also the item people quietly skip because the floor is already back down by the time they think about it. While the floor is open is also the only cheap moment to put in a cleanout. Add one. A basement bathroom with no cleanout means the next blockage gets cabled through the toilet flange.
Do not confuse either of these with a sump pump
They look similar sitting in a hole in a basement floor and they are not interchangeable in either direction. A sump pump moves clean groundwater and its basin is deliberately open to the gravel around it; a sewage ejector moves waste and its basin must be sealed and vented. Putting sewage through a sump pump destroys the pump and vents raw sewer gas into the room. One more honest note on money. People reach for the upflush because it looks cheaper, and the unit often is — but the gap closes fast once you price the ejector job properly, and it is the labor on the concrete, not the pump, that makes the difference. You also need enough fall from the shower base into the unit, which usually means a raised platform.
