Quick answer
Installation runs $224 to $533, about $374 on average (Angi), plus the toilet. Home Depot puts toilet plus labor at $350 to $800. A bad flange or soft floor adds more.
The parts for a do-it-yourself swap
Each does a different job, so they aren’t scored against each other. All three were new and in stock on Amazon on Oct 23, 2026.

What it costs to replace a toilet, by source
Three published sources, each measuring something slightly different. Read the label on each number.
| Source | What it measures | Range | Typical |
|---|---|---|---|
| Angi (updated May 30, 2026) | Professional installation | $224–$533 | $374 |
| Thumbtack (updated Tue, Aug 5) | Installation price nationally | $254–$615 | $396 |
| Home Depot cost guide | Plumber labor | $185–$400 | — |
| Home Depot cost guide | Mid-range toilet plus labor | $350–$800 | — |
| Angi | Hiring a plumber, by job scope | $300–$800 | — |
The sources agree closely on labor: roughly $375 to $400 for a straight swap. The spread in totals is the toilet you choose, and whatever the plumber finds when the old one comes up.
Home Depot says plumbers charge either a flat rate or by the hour for this job, and that it takes about 1 to 3 hours. It also says it will install a toilet you bought from it, with proof of purchase, and remove the old one.
Thumbtack’s page doesn’t print a year next to its Aug 5 update date, so treat its numbers as a second opinion behind Angi’s 2026 figures.
What the toilet itself costs
The biggest variable. Angi gives a typical price by type; Thumbtack gives ranges.
| Type | Angi typical | Thumbtack range |
|---|---|---|
| Two-piece (most common) | $375 | $89–$413 |
| One-piece | $800 | $169–$1,138 |
| Gravity flush | $375 | — |
| Dual flush | $500 | — |
| Pressure-assisted | $600 | — |
| In-wall tank / wall mounted | $700 | $216–$5,175 (wall-hung) |
| Upflush / macerator | $1,000 | — |
| Smart toilet | — | $1,199–$6,750 |
Angi says a new toilet can run $100 to $3,000 or more depending on brand and type, and Home Depot gives $100 for a basic model to $3,000-plus for a smart toilet. For similar flush systems, Angi notes you could pay $400 for one brand and over $1,200 for another.
One-piece versus two-piece changes install day as much as the price. Our one-piece vs two-piece guide compares four real models, including weight on the stairs.
Estimate your toilet replacement
Pick the toilet type, who installs it, and any extra work. It adds Angi’s typical toilet price, installation range and extra-repair costs.
| Example | Toilet | Labor | Extras | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two-piece, plumber | $375 | $224–$533 | — | $599–$908 |
| One-piece, plumber, haul away | $800 | $224–$533 | $50–$200 | $1,074–$1,533 |
| Two-piece, DIY | $375 | Your time | — | About $375 plus parts |
| Dual flush, plumber, new flange | $500 | $224–$533 | $145–$300 | $869–$1,333 |
These totals use Angi’s typical toilet price, which is mid-range. A basic two-piece at Thumbtack’s low end of $89 brings every total down by about $286.
My call: get the plumber’s quote in writing with the toilet, labor, haul-away and parts as separate lines. Then you can compare it to these numbers line by line.
| Repair | Typical cost (Angi) | Why it comes up |
|---|---|---|
| Toilet flange replacement | $145–$300 | Cracked or corroded flange under the old toilet |
| Wax ring replacement | $50–$200 | As a separate repair, not part of a swap |
| Valve replacement | $50–$150 | Old shutoff won’t close or leaks |
| Backflow preventer | $20–$150 | Where your code or setup calls for one |
| Pipe replacement | $70–$700 | Damaged supply or drain pipe |
| Toilet removal | $50–$200 | Haul-away of the old toilet |
| Flooring repair | $8–$24 per sq ft | Floor damaged by an old leak |
| Drain line repair | $670 on average | Damaged waste line |
| Moving the toilet | About $3,000 | New drain, vent and supply locations |
Angi says additional labor for surprises can add as much as $800 to an install. The flange is the most common one; Angi calls flange replacement one of the most common unexpected repairs.
My call: if the old toilet rocked, or the floor around it is soft or stained, plan on the flange and some subfloor before you start. Our low flange guide and leak at the base guide cover what you’ll find.
Parts for a do-it-yourself replacement
Thumbtack says most toilet parts other than the seat cost between $5 and $20. These three cover the seal, the bolts and the water line.

| Part | Key specs | Job | Pick it if | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Danco 10879 kit | Perfect Seal wax ring, Zero Cut bolts adjustable up to 3 in., fits flanges ½ in. above to 1½ in. below the floor (Danco) | Seal and floor bolts | You want the seal and bolts matched in one box | Your flange is more than 1½ in. below the floor |
| Fluidmaster 7530 seal | Wax-free, stackable, fits 3 in. or 4 in. drains, brass bolts, repositionable (Fluidmaster) | Seal | The floor is uneven or tile sits above a recessed flange | You prefer a standard wax ring |
| Fluidmaster B1T12 line | 12 in. braided stainless, ⅜ in. compression × ⅞ in. ballcock, 5-year warranty (listing) | Water supply | The shutoff is within 12 in. of the tank inlet | The old shutoff valve leaks; replace it first |
Fluidmaster says its 7530 can be repositioned without damaging the seal and needs no minimum temperature to install. Danco says both its Perfect Seal and Zero Cut bolts allow multiple repositions. Either one is more forgiving than a plain wax ring if you set the toilet crooked the first time.
Always replace the supply line when you replace the toilet. Our wax ring guide and supply line size guide go deeper, and our toilet replacement how-to walks through the swap.
How the toilet type changes install day
Thumbtack groups toilets into four kinds. Each one changes the work, not just the price.
| Type | What Thumbtack says | What it means for the install |
|---|---|---|
| Two-piece | Most popular; less expensive to install and repair | Tank and bowl carried separately; tank can be replaced alone |
| One-piece | Easier to clean and install; costlier to ship | One heavy piece onto the wax ring; two people |
| Wall-hung | Tank inside the wall; harder to repair | Carrier and in-wall tank; drywall work (Angi) |
| Smart | Touch-free flush, often a heated seat and bidet | Needs an outlet near the toilet; check before you buy |
Thumbtack notes a one-piece costs more to ship because it can’t be split and stacked. That shows up in delivery fees, and in how many people it takes to carry it in.
My call: a smart toilet’s outlet is the hidden cost people miss. If there isn’t a receptacle within reach of the toilet, that’s an electrician’s visit on top of the plumber’s.
Plumber, handyman or general contractor?
Who you hire changes the price, and what they can fix if something’s wrong.
| Who | What the sources say | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Plumber | Home Depot: $185 to $400 labor; flat or hourly | Any swap, and repairs to the flange, valve or drain |
| Handyman | Thumbtack: can change a toilet in many cases if the plumbing is already in place | A straight swap with sound plumbing |
| General contractor | Angi: markup of 13% to 22% of the installation cost | When the toilet is part of a remodel |
| Big-box install service | Home Depot installs toilets bought there, with proof of purchase, and removes the old one | Buying and installing in one order |
The difference shows up when the old toilet comes off. A plumber can replace a broken flange or a seized shutoff on the spot. A handyman may have to stop and send you to a plumber, which is a second visit.
My call: for a toilet in an older house, hire a plumber. The odds of a corroded shutoff or a cracked flange go up with the age of the house.
Floor and wall repairs under and behind the toilet
Angi’s figures for the damage an old leak leaves behind.
| Repair | Cost (Angi) | When |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom flooring | $8–$24 per sq ft | Tiles under the old toilet damaged by a leak |
| Subfloor | Can be more than flooring, per Angi | Soft or rotted subfloor |
| Drywall | $50–$100 per sq ft | Wall-mount toilets, or a leak that wet the wall |
| Paint | Extra, to match the patch | After drywall repair |
Angi’s point is the important one: the damaged tiles are usually right under the old toilet, so you won’t know until it’s lifted. A new toilet’s footprint may not cover the old one’s outline, either.
My call: if the old toilet rocked, press on the floor around the base with your heel before you buy anything. A soft spot changes the job from a swap to a floor repair.
The seat and the small parts
Thumbtack’s figures for the parts around the toilet.
| Part | Cost (Thumbtack) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Basic toilet seat | $40–$50 | Not always included with the toilet |
| Flapper, wax ring, flange and similar parts | $5–$20 each | Most toilet parts, per Thumbtack |
| Toilet handle (trip lever) | Under $20; high-end $50–$100 | Finish-matched handles cost more |
| Simple toilet repair | About $100–$250 | Thumbtack’s figure for a basic fix |
Check whether the toilet you’re buying includes a seat. In our one-piece vs two-piece comparison, both one-piece models included one and neither two-piece did.
My call: buy the seat in the same shape as the bowl, round or elongated. Our toilet seat size guide shows how to measure.
If you’re remodeling the bathroom at the same time
Angi’s averages for other plumbing work people often do with a toilet swap.
| Work | Average cost (Angi) |
|---|---|
| Installing a shower | $6,800 |
| Replacing a bathtub | $6,000 |
| Upgrading to a tankless water heater | $2,500 |
| Installing a sink | $500 |
| Upgrading a sink faucet | $250 |
| Shower head replacement | $150 |
Angi also covers bidets: a toilet with a built-in bidet or a separate bidet costs more because it ties into the plumbing, while an attachment is the simpler option. Our bidet attachment guide covers that route.
My call: if the floor is coming up anyway, that’s the time to move or replace the flange, not after the new tile is down.
Measure before you buy the new toilet
My call on the three measurements that decide whether a new toilet fits the old spot.
| Measure | How | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rough-in | Wall to the center of the closet bolts | Most toilets are 12 in.; 10 and 14 in. exist |
| Bowl shape | Round or elongated | Elongated sticks out farther into the room |
| Height | Floor to the rim | Chair or comfort height is taller than standard |
Our rough-in guide, round vs elongated guide and comfort height guide cover each one. Ordering the wrong rough-in is the most expensive mistake on this job, because the toilet goes back.
Do it yourself or hire a plumber?
The labor is the part you can save. Here’s what you take on when you do.
| Task | DIY | Plumber |
|---|---|---|
| Shut off and drain | Easy if the valve works | Replaces a stuck valve on the spot |
| Lift out the old toilet | Heavy; a second person helps | Part of the job |
| Inspect the flange | You decide if it’s sound | Repairs it if not |
| Set the new toilet | One try with wax; more with a wax-free seal | Part of the job |
| Haul away the old one | Your trip to the dump | Angi: $50 to $200 if added |
| If something’s wrong | A second trip to the store | Fixed while there, at extra cost |
Same location, a sound flange, a working shutoff and a solid floor.
A soft or stained floor, a broken flange, a shutoff that won’t close.
A one-piece toilet up stairs with no help; see our one-piece guide.
Moving the toilet, which means new drain, vent and supply lines.
I’m a licensed journeyman in Georgia, and this is one of the more DIY-friendly plumbing jobs. My call: what turns it into a plumber job is almost never the toilet, it’s what’s under it.
What happens on install day
Angi describes the job in four moves. Here’s each one with what can slow it down.
- 1Disconnect and drain
Close the shutoff, flush, and sponge out the tank and bowl. A shutoff that won’t close is the first possible extra.
- 2Remove the old toilet
Loosen the floor bolts and lift it straight up. This is when the flange and floor are first seen.
- 3Set the new toilet
New seal and bolts on a sound flange, then the toilet pressed straight down and bolted level.
- 4Reconnect and test
New supply line, water on, several flushes, and a check for leaks at the tank, the line and the base.
Angi’s average for this sequence is about $373 once you have the toilet. Home Depot says the job usually takes 1 to 3 hours, and the extra time almost always comes from the second step: what’s found under the old toilet.
My call: clear the bathroom before the plumber arrives. Take the rugs, the trash can and whatever’s on the tank lid out of the room, and have a place ready outside for the old toilet.
The shutoff valve behind the toilet
The small part that decides whether install day goes smoothly.
| Situation | What it means | Cost (Angi) |
|---|---|---|
| Valve closes fully | Swap goes ahead | Nothing extra |
| Valve drips when closed | Replace it before the new line goes on | $50–$150 valve replacement |
| Valve won’t turn | Water off at the main, then replace it | $50–$150 valve replacement |
| Old supply line is rigid copper or chrome tube | Replace with a braided line | Part of the swap |
My call: test the shutoff a day or two before the job. Turn it off, flush, and see whether the tank refills. If it does, the valve is leaking through, and you’ll want the plumber to plan on replacing it.
A new braided supply line is cheap insurance. Our toilet supply line guide compares them.
Ways to keep the cost down
From the sources, plus my call on each.
| Move | Why it works | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Buy the toilet yourself | You pick the price; installers like Home Depot will install one bought there | Home Depot |
| Haul the old toilet away yourself | Skips Angi’s $50 to $200 removal fee | Angi |
| Hire a plumber, not a general contractor, for a straight swap | Avoids a 13% to 22% markup | Angi |
| Test the shutoff first | No surprise valve on install day | My call |
| Bundle other small jobs into the same visit | One trip charge for several fixes | My call |
How to read a toilet replacement quote
A fair quote shows each of these lines. If one is missing, ask about it before you agree.
| Line on the quote | What to expect | From |
|---|---|---|
| The toilet | Your choice; about $375 typical two-piece, $800 one-piece | Angi |
| Labor | $185 to $400, flat or hourly | Home Depot |
| Seal, bolts, supply line | Often included; parts like these run $5 to $20 | Thumbtack |
| Haul-away | $50 to $200 if listed | Angi |
| Flange, if needed | $145 to $300 | Angi |
| Shutoff valve, if needed | $50 to $150 | Angi |
My call: ask the plumber to price the flange and valve as “only if needed” lines up front. Then a surprise under the old toilet is a number you already agreed to, not a negotiation with the water off.
Two quotes that land within about a hundred dollars of each other are probably both fair. If one is far higher, compare the lines; the difference is usually haul-away, a valve, or a one-piece toilet’s extra handling.
Repair or replace: when a new toilet makes sense
Angi’s signs to look for, with what each one usually means.
| Sign | Often means | Usually |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent leaks | Find where first, Angi says | Repair if it’s a part; replace if it’s the china |
| Wobbling | Worn wax seal or a loose bolt, per Angi | Repair first |
| Cracks in the bowl or tank | Can lead to leaks, per Angi | Replace |
| Running or slow fill | A flapper or fill valve | Repair |
| Frequent clogs | The toilet or the drain line | Diagnose first |
Angi suggests a dye test for leaks: add food coloring to the tank and watch whether it shows up in the bowl. If the running is a flapper, our running toilet cost guide is a far cheaper path than a new toilet.
Questions to ask before you book
So two quotes are comparable.
| Ask | Why |
|---|---|
| Is it a flat rate or hourly? | Home Depot: plumbers charge either way; 1 to 3 hours |
| Does the price include the wax ring, bolts and supply line? | Parts often are, but not always |
| Is haul-away included? | Angi: removal can be $50 to $200 |
| What if the flange is bad? | Angi: $145 to $300 more |
| Will you install a toilet I bought? | Home Depot does, with proof of purchase |
| Do you replace the shutoff if it won’t close? | Angi: valve replacement $50 to $150 |
For hourly rates and call fees in general, our plumber cost guide covers them, and our plumbing cost estimator scales prices by state.
