Best Pre-Rinse Faucet

For a standard commercial dish sink, the T&S B-0133-B wall-mount pre-rinse unit is the basic choice; pick the B-0133-ADF12-B if you also want a 12-inch add-on nozzle for filling pots. Both are 8-inch wall mounts with a 1.15 gpm B-0107 spray valve, which you can replace on its own when it wears out.

A pre-rinse unit is the tall spring-and-sprayer faucet over a commercial dish sink. You blast food off plates and pans before they go in the dish machine. It mounts on the wall (or deck) above the sink, with a mixing valve, a rigid riser, an overhead spring, a flexible hose and a squeeze-handle spray valve.

T&S B-0133-B: the standard wall-mount unit

Choose the T&S B-0133-B for a standard dish sink. T&S lists (tsbrass.com) an 8-inch wall-mount mixing faucet with centers adjustable from 7-3/4 to 8-1/4 inches, 1/2-inch NPT female eccentric inlets with 2-inch flanges, quarter-turn Eterna compression cartridges with spring checks to prevent cross flow, lever handles with color-coded indexes, an EasyInstall 18-inch riser, a 44-inch flexible stainless hose, a 6-inch wall bracket and a B-0107 spray valve at 1.15 gpm. T&S lists 20 to 125 psi and 40 to 140°F operating ranges, certification to ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1 and NSF/ANSI 61 and 372, and 2019 DOE pre-rinse spray valve Class II compliance.

T&S B-0133-ADF12-B: with an add-on fill faucet

Choose the T&S B-0133-ADF12-B if the same sink also fills pots and buckets. T&S lists (tsbrass.com) the same 8-inch wall-mount base, cartridges, riser, hose, bracket and 1.15 gpm B-0107 spray valve as the B-0133-B, plus an add-on faucet with a 12-inch swing nozzle and a stream regulator outlet. It lists the same pressure and temperature ranges and certifications.

The add-on nozzle lets you fill a stock pot without pulling the sprayer down and holding the trigger.

Replacing just the spray valve

The spray valve takes the most abuse: it gets dropped, banged into sinks and squeezed thousands of times a day. Both units above use the T&S B-0107 spray valve, which T&S lists (tsbrass.com) at 1.15 gpm. If the valve leaks or the handle breaks, you can replace the valve without replacing the whole unit.

Shut off the supply stops, squeeze the old valve to release pressure, then unthread it from the hose. Use thread sealant or a new washer as the instructions direct, and check for drips with the water back on.

Wall mount or deck mount?

Both units here mount on the wall, with the supplies coming out of the wall behind the sink. That is the most common setup on a commercial dish sink because it keeps the sink deck clear and puts the valve body above the splash zone.

T&S and other makers also sell deck-mount pre-rinse units for sinks with faucet holes in the deck, including single-hole versions. Look at where your supplies come from before choosing: wall stub-outs call for a wall-mount unit, and supplies that come up through the deck or a sink ledge call for a deck mount.

Keeping a pre-rinse unit working

The parts that wear are the spray valve, the hose, the spring and the cartridges. T&S lists quarter-turn Eterna compression cartridges with spring checks on both units; the spring checks stop hot and cold water from crossing over inside the faucet. If hot water shows up in the cold line or the other way around, a worn check can be the cause.

Inspect the hose for kinks and wear at the spray valve end, where it flexes the most, and replace it before it splits. Keep the hold-down ring and spray valve holder in place so the sprayer does not swing into staff or equipment.

Clean the spray face regularly in hard water areas, and keep a spare spray valve on hand; swapping one takes minutes and avoids shutting down the dish station.

Installing the unit

Rough in the hot and cold supplies at the right centers and height, with stub-outs that match the 1/2-inch NPT female inlets. T&S’s eccentric inlets let you adjust the centers from 7-3/4 to 8-1/4 inches, which helps when the stub-outs are slightly off. Thread the inlets in with sealant, set the flanges, then mount the faucet body and level it.

Attach the riser, spring and hose, fasten the wall bracket into solid backing, and turn the water on slowly to check every joint for drips. Follow the T&S installation instructions for the exact order and torque.

Measuring for a pre-rinse unit

Check three things before you order. First, the inlet centers: both units here are 8-inch wall mounts with centers adjustable from 7-3/4 to 8-1/4 inches. Second, the inlets: T&S lists 1/2-inch NPT female inlets, so your stub-outs need matching male threads. Third, the height: the riser and spring add a lot of height above the sink, so check ceiling height, shelves and hoods above the sink.

The wall bracket ties the riser to the wall so the unit does not wobble when someone yanks the hose. Mount it into solid backing.

Flow rate and water savings

Pre-rinse spray valves are covered by federal efficiency rules, which is why T&S lists 2019 DOE Class II compliance and a 1.15 gpm spray valve. A lower-flow valve uses less hot water, which also cuts the energy cost of heating it.

If your sprayer feels weak, check that the supply stops are fully open and the spray face is clean before you assume the valve is the problem. Mineral buildup on the spray face is common in hard water.

Hot water and temperature

T&S lists a 140°F maximum operating temperature for these units. Some commercial kitchens run very hot water for dishwashing, so check what temperature reaches the pre-rinse before installing it. If the water is hotter than the unit is rated for, ask your plumber about a mixing valve on that supply; our thermostatic mixing valve guide explains how they work.

The heat-resistant handle on the hose helps when rinsing with hot water, but staff should still keep hands out of the spray.

Other sinks in the kitchen

A pre-rinse unit sits over the dish sink. Mop and floor-cleaning tasks belong at a mop sink; see our mop sink guide. For a utility or laundry sink in a back room, see our utility sink guide. Health and plumbing codes set requirements for commercial kitchens, so check with your local inspector and health department before changing fixtures.
