Best Roman Tub Faucet

For a deck-mount roman tub faucet, pair the Delta Trinsic T2759-SS trim with Delta’s R2707 rough-in, or the Moen Eva T943BN trim with Moen’s 4792 valve. Roman tub trims and valves are sold separately and only work within one brand, so check hole spacing and deck thickness before you order.

This guide covers two-handle roman tub faucets that mount on a tub deck or ledge.

A roman tub faucet mounts on the tub deck or the ledge around a drop-in or platform tub, with two handles and a spout in three holes. It is different from a freestanding tub filler, which stands on the floor beside the tub, and from the wall valve and spout on an alcove tub/shower.

The most important thing to know before buying: almost every roman tub faucet is sold as a trim kit, and the valve body under the deck is a separate part from the same maker.

Trim kit vs rough-in valve: buy both

The trim is what you see: the spout, the two handles and their escutcheons. The rough-in valve is the brass body under the deck that the water lines connect to. Delta says the T2759 is trim only and that you must buy rough-in R2707 separately; Moen’s T943 spec sheet lists the valves it fits.

Trims and valves are not interchangeable between brands. If you are replacing only the visible trim on an existing tub, find the brand and model of the valve already in the deck before you order. If you are building new, buy the trim and valve together so they match.

Delta offers alternative R2707 versions for different supply connections: Delta lists R2707-PX for PEX crimp and R2707-MF for cold expansion PEX. Moen sells its valves in several versions too, so pick the one that matches the pipe you are running.

Delta Trinsic T2759-SS with R2707

Choose the Delta Trinsic T2759-SS for a modern trim with a wide hole range. Delta lists (deltafaucet.com) a two-handle roman tub trim with a rigid slip-on spout, 3-hole installation from 8 to 16 inches, ADA compliance and a Brilliance Stainless finish that Delta says is an excellent match with nickel or stainless steel, under Delta’s lifetime limited warranty. Delta notes it is trim only and needs the R2707 rough-in.

Moen Eva T943BN with the 4792 valve

Choose the Moen Eva T943BN for a curved, traditional look in brushed nickel. Moen’s spec sheet (maker page: assets.moen.com/shared/docs/product-specifications/t943sp.pdf) lists a two-handle roman tub faucet trim with metal construction and lever handles, certified to ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1, ADA for lever handles, a lifetime limited warranty against leaks, drips and finish defects for the original consumer purchaser, and valves 4792, 4793, 4794, 4796, 4797 and 4798.

Moen’s 4792 spec sheet (maker page: assets.moen.com/shared/docs/product-specifications/4792sp.pdf) lists an adjustable roman tub valve on 10-inch minimum centers, for rough decks up to 3-3/8 inches thick plus up to 1-1/4 inches of finish deck, with 1/2-inch copper inlets and outlets, a no-cut adjustable spout shank, an included test plug and spout shank tool, and a design flow of 16 gpm at 45 psi. Moen says it works with any Moen deck-mount roman tub trim.

Hot water safety: the mixing valve note

A two-handle roman tub faucet mixes hot and cold by how far you open each handle; neither spec sheet we read lists a built-in hot water temperature limit. Moen’s 4792 spec sheet (maker page: assets.moen.com/shared/docs/product-specifications/4792sp.pdf) notes that plumbing codes require this valve to be used with a device conforming to ASSE, and lists its 104465 thermostatic mixing valve, sold separately, as certified to ASSE 1070.

That device usually goes in the hot supply line under the deck, where it limits the temperature reaching the tub spout. Check your local code for the exact requirement and set temperature. Our thermostatic mixing valve guide explains how these valves work and where they go.

Hole spacing and deck thickness

Measure the distance between the outer two holes, center to center, on the tub deck. Delta lists the Trinsic for 8 to 16 inches; Moen lists the 4792 for 10-inch centers minimum. If your existing holes are closer than the valve allows, you cannot just swap the faucet.

Also measure the deck thickness. Moen lists the 4792 for rough decks up to 3-3/8 inches plus up to 1-1/4 inches of finish material such as tile or stone. A thick stone deck on a platform tub can exceed what some valves allow, so check the maker’s spec before you build the platform.

Make sure the spout reaches past the tub rim and lands water inside the tub, and that there is room behind the handles for your hand. Check the maker’s spout reach and height on the spec sheet against your tub drawing.

Fill speed

Big soaking tubs take a lot of water, and roman tub valves are made to fill them. Moen designs the 4792 to deliver 16 gpm at 45 psi. Actual fill time depends on your water pressure, pipe size and how far the handles are open.

Fill speed only helps if the water heater can keep up. A large soaking tub can use much of a standard tank’s hot water in one fill, so compare the tub’s capacity on its spec sheet with your water heater before you commit to a big tub.

Access and installation

Install the valve while the deck is open. Moen includes a test plug with the 4792; follow the maker’s instructions and your inspector’s testing requirements before the deck is closed in. Leave an access panel to the valve and supply lines where the code or tub maker calls for one; our access panel guide covers sizing.

For PEX supplies, choose the matching valve version and use the right tool: our PEX crimp tool guide covers crimp and clamp tools. The trim usually goes on after the deck and tile are finished, which protects the finish during construction.

Replacing only the trim on an old roman tub? Shut off the supply, note the valve brand and model stamped on the body, and buy trim from the same maker’s matching list.

Adding a hand shower

Many roman tub trims come in a version with a pull-out hand shower and diverter, which is handy for rinsing hair or cleaning the tub. These need a valve made for a hand shower: Amazon listings show Delta’s R4707 rough-in for hand-shower roman tub trims and Moen’s 9792 valve with a shower diverter. Pick the trim first, then buy the valve its spec sheet names.

If you would rather add a hand shower in a separate shower, see our handheld shower head guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does a roman tub faucet include the valve?

Usually not. Delta says the T2759 trim needs the R2707 rough-in sold separately, and Moen’s T943 spec sheet lists the valves it fits.

Can I use a Moen trim on a Delta roman tub valve?

No. Trims and valves are brand-specific, so buy the valve listed on the trim’s spec sheet.

What spacing do roman tub faucets need?

Delta lists the Trinsic for 3 holes spread 8 to 16 inches; Moen lists the 4792 valve for 10-inch centers minimum.

Do I need a mixing valve with a roman tub faucet?

Moen’s 4792 spec sheet says plumbing codes require it to be used with an ASSE-conforming device, and lists its ASSE 1070 thermostatic mixing valve. Check local code.

How fast does a roman tub valve fill?

Moen designs the 4792 to deliver 16 gpm at 45 psi; real fill time depends on your pressure and piping.
