Torch Keeps Going Out Mid-Joint? Here Is Why

You get the joint almost up to heat and the flame dies. Relight, get a little further, it dies again. It is rarely a faulty torch, and there are only a handful of causes.

The cylinder is getting cold, and that is physics

The most common cause, and the least obvious. As gas boils off, the cylinder chills itself. A cold cylinder produces less vapor pressure, the flame weakens, and eventually it will not sustain.

The tells are all consistent:

  • The cylinder is cold or frosted around the lower half.
  • It gets worse the longer you run, and better after a rest.
  • It is worse on big fittings, because you are holding the trigger longer.
  • It is much worse outdoors in winter, or in an unheated basement.

What actually helps: let it warm between joints, keep the cylinder upright so you are drawing vapor rather than liquid, carry a spare and alternate, and keep cylinders somewhere warm rather than in a cold van overnight.

The cylinder is emptier than it feels

The last portion of a cylinder produces noticeably weaker heat — enough to light and look normal, not enough to bring a large fitting up. If the flame is short and lazy and the cylinder feels light, change it before you blame anything else.

Position: pointing it down starves it

🔴 A cylinder tipped past horizontal feeds liquid into the torch instead of vapor. You get a sputtering, yellow, unstable flame that dies, and the burner runs cold and sooty.

This is the one that catches people working overhead or under a sink, where the natural grip puts the cylinder upside down. If you must work at an awkward angle, a torch designed to run in any position is the fix — otherwise reposition yourself, not the bottle.

The torch head itself

  • A blocked or sooted orifice from previous poor combustion. Symptom: a weak flame that will not adjust properly no matter what you do with the valve.
  • A worn seal at the cylinder connection, which leaks and starves the burner. Symptom: you can smell gas, and the flame is inconsistent from the first second.
  • A failing igniter on a trigger-start head. This looks like the torch going out but is actually the torch never staying lit — if it holds when you light it by hand, the igniter is your answer.

Or the torch is fine and the job is too big for it

A small burner on a 1-inch fitting or a valve body will lose the race against the metal drawing heat away. The flame stays lit, the joint never gets there, and it feels like a fuel problem. If you are consistently working larger copper, that is a head-size question rather than a fault.

Why does my propane torch keep going out?

Usually the cylinder chilling as gas boils off, which drops vapor pressure until the flame cannot sustain. A frosted cylinder that works again after a rest is the giveaway. A nearly empty cylinder and an upside-down cylinder produce the same symptom.

Why does the flame die when I tip the torch?

Past horizontal, the torch draws liquid instead of vapor. You get a yellow, sputtering flame that goes out. Keep the cylinder upright, or use a head rated to run in any position.
