Garbage Disposal Stopper Replacement: Which Fits?

Plumbing Picks is reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

Quick answer from a licensed plumber: Match the stopper to the brand and the feed type. InSinkErator says its stoppers fit “all InSinkErator manufactured disposers.” Waste King EZ Mount continuous-feed units use the 1025 guard and stopper. Batch-feed disposers use the stopper as the on switch, so they need the maker’s own batch-feed stopper: Waste King lists one for EZ Mount (1028) and one for Pro 3-Bolt (3158AMC).

InSinkErator disposer? InSinkErator says its sink stopper is “For use on all InSinkErator manufactured disposers.” See the InSinkErator STP-SS on Amazon

Continuous Feed or Batch Feed Decides Everything

A continuous-feed disposer runs from a switch, and its stopper only closes the drain. A batch-feed disposer uses the stopper as the switch. Moen explains the difference: batch-feed models “are actuated with a stopper” and “are turned off when the stopper is removed.” The Amazon listing for Waste King’s EZ Mount batch stopper says it “activates all EZ Mount batch feed models from Waste King.”

Not sure which you have? If a wall switch or an air button starts the disposer, it is continuous feed. If it only runs with the stopper turned in, it is batch feed. The model label on the disposer confirms it; Waste King says its label is “affixed to the bottom of your disposal.”

InSinkErator

InSinkErator’s stoppers come in several finishes, and InSinkErator says each is “For use on all InSinkErator manufactured disposers.” The stainless STP-SS measures “3.25-in by 1-in,” per its listing. The SilverSaver is the one to pick if forks keep ending up in the disposer: it stays in the drain in its open position and still lets water through. InSinkErator also says, “When not operating a disposer, leave the stopper in place to reduce the risk of objects falling into the disposer.”

Waste King and Moen

For continuous-feed Waste King EZ Mount units, the stopper comes with the splash guard as one part, the 1025, which Waste King’s own FAQ names. Pro 3-Bolt units have a built-in splash guard, per Waste King, and their standard stopper comes in the 3157AMC Pro 3-Bolt Mount sink flange kit. Our splash guard guide covers the guard side of the 1025. For Moen, the batch-feed Host Series GXB75C’s listing says it “operates only when the stopper is engaged”; the Moen stopper was not part of our Amazon check.

What to Buy

Matched to the table:

We did not find Waste King’s Pro 3-Bolt batch stopper (3158AMC) or its Pro 3-Bolt flange kit (3157AMC) shipped or sold by Amazon when we checked.

When to Call a Licensed Plumber

  • A batch-feed disposer will not start with its correct stopper in place. The problem is the unit or its switch, not the stopper.
  • The sink will not hold water with a new stopper in place. The flange or its putty seal may be the leak.

FAQ

Are garbage disposal stoppers universal?

No. InSinkErator says its stoppers are for all InSinkErator-manufactured disposers, Waste King’s 1025 is for EZ Mount units, and batch-feed disposers need their own maker’s batch-feed stopper.

Will an InSinkErator stopper fit my sink?

InSinkErator says its stoppers are for use on all InSinkErator-manufactured disposers. The STP-PL listing says it fits standard 3-1/2-inch drain openings.

What is a batch feed stopper?

On a batch-feed disposer the stopper is the switch. Moen says batch-feed models are actuated with a stopper and turn off when it is removed.

What is the InSinkErator SilverSaver?

A dual-position stopper that InSinkErator says lets water and small food particles into the disposer but keeps silverware out, and closes tightly as a regular sink stopper.

Which stopper fits a Waste King EZ Mount disposal?

The 1025 splash guard and stopper for continuous-feed units, and the EZ Mount batch feed stopper for batch-feed units, per Waste King.

Bottom Line

Continuous feed: any stopper made for your brand, or InSinkErator’s SilverSaver if you keep losing forks. Batch feed: only the batch-feed stopper listed for your brand and mount, because it is the switch.
