Woodford Frost-Free Faucet Repair Kit: Which One Fits?

Plumbing Picks is reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

Quick answer from a licensed plumber: Woodford has a factory kit for every current model, and none of them includes the rod. Model 14: RK-14MH. Model 17: RK-17MH (it includes the RK-17VB vacuum breaker float kit). Model 19 and Model 16: RK-19. Model 22 / V22: RK-22PRV for 2008-and-later faucets, RK-22MH for the older round-handle ones. Models 25, 27, 30: RK-25, RK-27, RK-30. Then order the rod or valve stem by wall thickness: measure the old rod tip to tip and read the part off the chart below.

The common one: RK-17MH Woodford Model 17 Repair Kit (Amazon-sold on September 24, 2026); add the 35722 rod for an 8-inch wall or 35724 for a 12-inch wall if the stem is bent.

Step 1: Identify the Model

Woodford’s Faucet Finder identifies the model from “handle shape, what’s on the spout, markings on the casting,” and it notes that an outdoor wall faucet “also goes by sillcock, hose bibb, spigot or hydrant.” The features that separate the common residential models, from Woodford’s catalog sheets and finder:

  • Model 17: anti-siphon wall faucet with a built-in backflow device (“ASSE 1019 – Type C Listed”), a “Powder-coated, die cast aluminum handle,” and no burst protection: “This faucet will not rupture from freezing when the valve is shut off and the hose is removed.”
  • Model 19: the same anti-siphon design plus a “Patented resetting pressure relief valve” that “prevents the faucet tube from bursting in freezing conditions even if a hose is unintentionally left on,” with an “Oval, powder-coated, die cast aluminum handle.” Woodford says it “offers anti-siphon and non-rupture protection.”
  • Model 16: repaired with the Model 19 kit; the finder says “The Model 16 already has the PRV built in” and “the Model 16 doesn’t use” a vacuum breaker.
  • Model 22 and V22: hot-and-cold wall faucets with two handles. The finder splits them at 2008: the current “2008+ vent float design” with oval aluminum handles, and the “Pre-2008 Model 22 & V22” with “round metal handles.”
  • Model 14: the finder notes an “Older Model 14 — gray handle” where “only the handle differs (older gray metal vs. tan).”
  • Models 25, 27 and 30: faucets that use an add-on hose-thread backflow device (the 34HA on the 25, the 50HA on the 27 and 30) rather than a built-in vacuum breaker.

Step 2: Match the Repair Kit

Woodford says “Every current model has a factory repair kit.” The kits below and their contents are as the Faucet Finder prints them “From the official catalog sheets.” None of them includes the rod: “Repair kits don’t include the rod. Choose your model and wall thickness to get the exact part.”

Two details in that table matter on a Model 17. Woodford lists a 30418 check valve for “Pre 1997 Faucets” and says the 30459 bevel check valve “is for faucets dated 04/98 or later — check the packing nut,” so the kit carries both and you fit the one that matches the date on your faucet. And the RK-17MH includes the RK-17VB float kit, so a leaking vacuum breaker cap on a 17 is covered by the same kit. The other models’ float kits, and PRIER’s, are in our vacuum breaker replacement guide.

Step 3: Order the Rod or Stem by Wall Thickness

The rod is sold separately because it depends on the wall. Woodford: “Wall-thickness-specific parts (valve stems and operating rods) are ordered by your wall thickness in inches — measure it or count it off the faucet’s overall length.” The catalog sheets add: “When ordering, specify model, inlet and wall thickness.” Measure the old rod tip to tip and read the part off Woodford’s length chart:

Wall thicknessOverall length (Woodford Dim. “A”)Model 14 / 17 valve stemModel 16 / 19 / 22 / V22: RK-PRV kit (rod only)Model 25 / 27 / 30 rod only

24″25 7/8″35727RK-PRV-24 (35102)30324 (24-7/16″)

For the Model 16, 19, 22 and V22 the RK-PRV kit is the rod: Woodford says to “Measure the overall length of the brass rod (with rod and check valve attached) and order the matching size, e.g. RK-PRV-10 for a 10″ wall,” and that a Model 22 or V22 needs “Quantity 2” (one per handle).

The finder also lists an adjustable alternative for 4- to 14-inch walls, the RK-ADJ-PRV, which uses “color-coded stems you assemble to match your measured rod length” and “includes the patented resetting anti-burst PRV valve”; Woodford says it can “upgrade a Model 14 or 17 with burst protection, or to replace the rod in a Model 16, 19, 22, or V22.”

Step 4: Do the Repair

Turn the supply off first and confirm it is off before you loosen anything. If a shutoff valve will not close, or the tank or pipe is cracked, stop and call a licensed plumber. Woodford’s Model 17 page lists a “Model 17 Repair Kit Installation” document and a “Retainer Removal” guide alongside the troubleshooting sheet; follow the one for your model.

Two of Woodford’s own rules explain most repeat failures: the catalog sheets say the faucet “must be installed with downward pitch toward nozzle and hose must be removed in freezing weather or faucet may freeze and burst,” and the anti-siphon device “shall not be subjected to more than (12) hours of continuous water pressure,” which is what a timer or a hose left on does.

If water is coming out inside the wall or the basement when the faucet runs, the tube behind the wall has split from freezing; do not use the faucet, and have a licensed plumber replace it. A repair kit fixes the valve end, not a burst tube. Have a PRIER hydrant instead? Our Prier repair kit guide maps its kits by symptom.

FAQ

Which repair kit fits a Woodford Model 17?

The RK-17MH. Woodford lists it with the handle screw, metal handle, packing nut, EPDM packing, packing washer, check valves for pre-1997 and 04/98-or-later faucets, valve seat rubber, retainer screw and the RK-17VB vacuum breaker float kit. The rod (valve stem 35720 to 35727 and 35736 to 35738 by wall thickness) is separate.

Which repair kit fits a Woodford Model 19?

The RK-19, with the oval aluminum handle, packing nut, EPDM packing, packing washer, 30459 check valve, seat rubber, retainer screw and the RK-19VB float kit. The rod is the RK-PRV kit in your wall thickness, RK-PRV-4 through RK-PRV-24.

How do I know what length rod my Woodford faucet needs?

Measure the old rod tip to tip and match it to Woodford’s chart: 5 7/8 inches is a 4-inch wall, 9 7/8 is 8 inches, 13 7/8 is 12 inches, and so on in 2-inch steps to 25 7/8 inches for a 24-inch wall.

Does the Woodford repair kit include the rod?

No. Woodford says repair kits do not include the rod, because the rod or valve stem is sized to the wall thickness and ordered separately.

What is the difference between a Woodford Model 17 and Model 19?

Both are freezeless anti-siphon wall faucets rated to 125 psi and 120 degrees F. The 19 adds Woodford’s patented resetting pressure relief valve so the tube does not burst if a hose is left on in freezing weather; the 17 relies on the hose being removed.

Bottom Line

Read the handle and the spout to name the model, buy that model’s kit, and order the rod by wall thickness from the measured length of the old one. A Model 17 kit covers the vacuum breaker cap too. If the faucet leaks inside the wall, the tube has burst and a kit will not fix it.
